John Edward Whitley, 74, went to be with the Lord on July 1, 2025. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Jean Wilmouth Whitley, sisters; Carolyn Whitley McCrocklin (Bob), Linda Whitley Mercer; Nephews, Michael Benjamin Mercer (Katelyn), Christopher Bryant Mercer (Hannah), Joseph Brian McCrocklin (Lauren); Niece, Dr. Morgan McCrocklin Cheatham (Scott); Great Nieces, Zoe Grace Cheatham, Tessa Whitley Cheatham, Rowen Michelle Mercer, Reese Audrey Mercer; Great Nephews, David Scott Cheatham III, Nolan Brian McCrocklin, Van Wayne McCrocklin, Holden Michael Mercer, Hayes Grady Mercer, and dear friends Buddy and Kathy Garnett.
John spent 25 years of his career at United Parcel Service, and 20 years at American Critical Care Services as Public Relations Representative.
John was a licensed and instrument-rated pilot and enjoyed flying as a hobby.
He loved his family who were a big part of his life, and they loved him beyond measure. His quick wit and funny stories, his kind and winsome spirit served as a people magnet. He was always fun to be around, and he would go out of his way to help others in need.
As a member of the Virginia Professional Photographers Association, John was an avid photographer, and he was highlighted in Virginia Wildlife Magazine. Photography was more than a hobby for John, and he blessed family and friends always with his beautiful work. He and Jean traveled often, and he enjoyed capturing the beauty of God’s handiwork with his camera. His photos were always stunning.
He was an early riser in the insomniacs spinning class at ACAC three times a week and was beloved by his many friends at the club who worked out together and who became like family to him.
In February of 2018, John suffered a stroke, and his recovery journey has been marked with amazing physical strength and stamina and emotional fortitude that have been an example to us all. He seldom complained and was surrounded by a loving wife who was his caregiver, his family and friends who supported and prayed for him consistently and we know God’s angels have always been and continue to be around him.
John was a charter member of Huguenot Road Baptist Church, where he served as an usher for many years. Being homebound, John and Jean have enjoyed the on-line messages and ministries of The Chapel RVA for several years. John will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He taught us how to live a full and purposeful life to the very end, how to love his wife and family and friends well and then to meet his Maker at his heavenly homegoing where God promises we will meet again one day.
