Our mom, Katherine M. Griffin, 84, of Richmond, completed her life's journey to join our dad in Heaven on January 8, 2016. Growing up in the farmlands of Iowa, she dreamed of something bigger. Following her high school graduation, she packed and left everything familiar to join the Army, where she served as a secretary for two generals in Germany during the Korean War. Following her military service, she moved to Richmond and pursued a career with the local telephone company. She was blessed with a wonderful marriage of 54 years to William R. Griffin and is survived by her children, Susan Mjoness (Mark), Joan Lowman (Steve), Sharon Griffin (Kathryn), and Russell Griffin. She was a loving grandmother to Matt, Jessy, David and Hannah; and a great grandmother to Lincoln and Matthew. She is also survived by a sister, Gloria Fridley (Bob) in Florida, and numerous relatives throughout Virginia. She was a volunteer at Johnston Willis Hospital for many years and was a faithful member of Bon Air Baptist Church, where she participated in multiple mission trips across the world. She cherished time spent with family, neighbors and church friends. She instilled in her children a love of gardening, an interest in reading, an appreciation for travel and the importance of giving to others. Funeral services will be held at 11am, on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Rd, Midlothian, Va., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place on Thursday, January 14, at 2pm, at Virginia Veterans Cemetery, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Virginia Veterans Services Foundation, 900 East Main Street, 6th Floor West Wing, Richmond, Va. 23219. Until our paths cross again, Mom, you will be in our hearts.
