Catherine Woodard passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, on the evening of March 12, 2024. She was born on August 18, 1936, to Dean K. Christensen and Helen (Stallings) Christensen. Catherine's siblings include Phillip, Dean, Brent, and Jeff. Her parents preceded her in death.
Catherine's journey took her from Salt Lake to the communities of Midvale, Sandy, and finally, Riverton, Utah. Her early years in Salt Lake City were the foundation of a life marked by resilience and a deep affection for animals, especially cats.
Throughout her life, Catherine faced numerous health challenges, starting at a young age. She handled these challenges with stoicism and grace, inspiring everyone who knew her. Despite these battles, her spirit remained unbroken, a testament to her inner fortitude. Her family would often discuss that she had "nine lives" (like her beloved cats) as she defied several life-threatening health challenges and injuries.
She was devoted mother to her four sons: Scott (Silvia), Mark (Joan), Tracy, and Eric (Valerie). Grandchildren include Steven, Michael, Michelle, Spencer (Amanda), Cory (Loly), Kylee, Logan, and Dylan. Catherine's greatest joy was found in the time spent with her family. Her gardens were also a source of immense pride and joy, a reflection of her ability to nurture and grow not just plants but the bonds of family and friendship. Catherine's love extended beyond her immediate family, enveloping her grandchildren and her beloved cats in warmth and affection, leaving them with cherished memories that will forever illuminate their lives. Catherine got the nickname "Mugger" from her grandson Logan over 12 years ago.
Although Catherine's exterior was often perceived as tough, those close to her recognized her immense kindness, the extent of her care for others, and her genuine compassion for animals. She leaves a legacy filled with love, strength, and the significance of family and all living creatures.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Valerie (daughter-in-law), who provided unwavering support and care in Catherine's final months. Our thanks also go to the compassionate caregivers from Visiting Angels, especially Fleurette and Terry, whose kindness and dedication comforted Catherine and her family. Catherine's granddaughter Kylee and daughter-in-law Joan were also instrumental during these last few weeks of her life.
Catherine was a lifelong active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and always held a calling in her adult life. She served lovingly and willingly. Catherine possessed a remarkable talent for the piano and served in numerous callings throughout her lifetime.
Catherine had very specific instructions regarding her funeral. She only wanted a "brief" graveside ceremony. Due to weather and seating, we have opted to move the "graveside" ceremony inside. Instead of traditional viewing, we will have "visiting time" from 12:00 to 12:45. Catherine's graveside ceremony will be on March 15 at 1:00 pm at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, Millcreek, Utah 84106. There will be a lunch for family and close friends after the services.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to an animal welfare charity of one's choice in Catherine Woodard's name, celebrating her life by spreading kindness and support to those in need, both human and animal alike.
Catherine Woodard will be profoundly missed but lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy will continue to flourish in her family's lives, the beauty of the gardens she so tenderly cultivated, and the lives of the animals she cherished.
