David Craig Burningham died August 15, 2010 at home with his family by his side. Craig was born August 31, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah to David and Maxine Atkin Burningham. He grew-up in Salt Lake City, graduating from Highland High School. He served in the LDS Alaskan-Canadian Mission from 1961-1963. He also served in the Air Force ROTC and the United States Marine Corps until he was honorably discharged after being diagnosed with diabetes.
On June 15, 1964, Craig married the love of his life, Dixie Lee Baird, in Bountiful, Utah. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
Craig graduated from the University of Utah with a B.S. in elementary education and later received his M.Ed. from Utah State University. He taught school at Vista Elementary School in the Granite School District for 30 years. He was known by his students affectionately as, “Mr. B.” Craig loved animals and surrounded himself with hundreds of animals of all kinds throughout his life. He was a Civil War and WWII history buff, amateur archaeologist, and an expert of vintage aircraft. He enjoyed taking care of his trees and yard, spending time with his family, and he spent much of his leisure time exploring the west Utah desert.
Craig is survived by his wife Dixie, two daughters, Becky Griffin and Brittany (Ryon) Lott, three sons, Brad, Brandon (Autumn), and Beau (Jane), 16 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, a brother, Rex (Kati) Burningham, and sister, Jorja (Rod) Lloyd. Preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Channing, his most precious son Shelby, and thousands of little critters.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 21, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive. Friends may call August 20, 2010 in the evening from 6-8 pm at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary and one hour prior to services. Burial at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
