-David Dwight Mortensen, age 44, son of J. Ross and Hope Carol (Kohler) Mortensen, was born June 28, 1969 in San Francisco, California. He left our presence, June 30, 2013 while home in Taylorsville, Utah.
David had to fight for his life from the time he was born. He suffered pain unflinchingly throughout his childhood and teenage years from many operations, and had unremitting pain and residual effects from illnesses and accidents throughout his life.
He was a model school and LDS Seminary student - and a gifted athlete. He was blessed with a beautiful, smooth, tenor voice, loved playing the Cello and progressing on the piano - plus singing, dancing, and acting in school plays, choirs, and choral groups. He graduated from Clovis High School in Clovis, California - and ever after maintained a lifetime of learning through college classes, voracious reading and specialized studies in a wide array of interests.
He was a model Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Award - which contributed much to his great love of the out of doors; hiking, fishing, camping, and boating.
David was well-loved by all who knew him. Words used to describe him, even as an adult were: sweet, tender, big-hearted, soulful, kind, sensitive, beautiful personality, handsome, trusted colleague, hard worker, calm and thoughtful. He was a friend to all, and maintained a childlike wonder throughout life.
He truly desired to serve mankind and please his Heavenly Father.
Some of the many hobbies and past-times he enjoyed were airplane piloting, hang gliding, biking, speed skating, rollerblading, playing in or on water, fishing, fast cars - shopping and dressing to the nines (complementing his statuesque appearance) under the tutelage of David Schmidt, his Brother-in-Law, friend, and clothier extraordinaire.
He was also a big fan of plays, shows, great music, and musical events, especially at the University of Utah, the Utah Opera and Symphony, and Utah Lite Opera.
He held many different, enticing jobs preceding his past 15 years working for Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company. He is greatly admired for the work he has done there. When asked of those who knew him at Wadsworth, "How do you replace a man like that?" the unhesitating response was, "You don't!"
David is survived by his parents, J. Ross Mortensen and Hope Carol (Kohler) Mortensen, and siblings: Shalee Mortensen (Schmidt), Daniel Ross Mortensen, Adam Leo Mortensen, Liesl Mortensen (Herbold), Nathan (Natey) Gale Mortensen, Carol Mortensen,
and Joel Ross Mortensen, having been preceded in death by Ruth Mortensen (on the same date, 37 years ago).
We believe David also has a Heavenly Father who deeply loves him and welcomes him back! Dabi-Disi, we love you to guys.
Funeral Service will be held Monday, July 8, 2013, at 10 AM at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary (3401 Highland Drive; SLC, Utah ). The funeral service will be preceded by a private family gathering at 9 AM. Interment in Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park will be immediately following the Funeral Service.
