1925 -2016
Evadeane Johns Gray, 90, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and dear friend passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah, on January 6, 2016.
Evadeane was born on February 13, 1925 in Fillmore, Utah to Howard D/ Johns and Marjorie L. Johns. She was a member of the LDS church. Evadeane graduated from Millard High School and Utah State University where she loved leading bands as a Drum Majorette while earning a degree in Social Work.
She married Rivers Young Gray, Jr. in Fillmore, Utah, on September 18, 1948, later divorced.
Evadeane, fondly known as Ev graciously volunteered her time in many ways. Over the years, she chaired two Teleramas for the March of Dimes and was a United Fund Board Member, eventually becoming the Public Relations Director. She also was the manager of public relations and marketing for the Royal and Rodeway Inns.
Ev had a great love for Downtown Salt Lake City. For 15 years, she served as the Executive Director of the Downtown Retail Merchants Association. Her low key, cooperative approach to public service and downtown betterment gently instructed, persuaded, and nudged Utah governors and mayors to attune themselves to the needs of the Downtown Community.
Ev adored and cherished her family. She was in every way an advocate for her children, maintaining strength and courage throughout her life. There was nothing more important to Ev than being surrounded by those she loved. With quick humor, an infectious laugh, and joyful spirit, Ev had an amazing talent for making devoted friends. Lucky were those who experienced her storytelling, charm, and wit. She created a legacy of love that will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her four children, Marjann (Don Homer), Bobbi (Rick Plewe), John R. Gray, and Curtis S. (Julie Gray); nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Maureen Johns.
A viewing will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive on Sunday January 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm where friends may call. A graveside service will be held at Fillmore City Cemetery on Monday, January 11, 2015 at noon. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Moran Eye Center.
She has worked her magic. She has made her music. We will miss her!
