Our beloved, husband, father, grandfather, Fred G. Cortese, passed away January 18, 2017. He was born August 23, 1927 to Fredric and Drusilla Tonnesen Cortese. Fred grew up in Salt Lake City, graduating from Granite High School in 1945. He proudly served in the United States Navy during World War II. He married his High School sweetheart, Barbara Weiler on June 25, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She was the love of his life. Together they were blessed with four children.
Fred was a gifted and hard working businessman. Together with his wife Barbara, they owned two Arctic Circle Restaurants and a Jiffy Lube in the Salt Lake City area. They also owned and operated a wholesale manufacturing and distributing uniform clothing business. He was a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He played High School football and basketball for Granite High. He loved playing tennis, golf and was an excellent gardener. He built his own greenhouse and every spring would plant seeds and a variety of flowers. His yard was beautiful and his prize tomatoes were always a great source of pride for him.
As a youth he played the trumpet in the school band and occasionally at Sunday Sacrament meetings or youth gatherings, which was one of the many reasons our mom fall in love with him. He found great joy in serving others. His selfless acts of kindness were felt by all his family and friends. He had a great sense of humor even when times got tough. His cheerfulness and his devotion to our mother blessed all of our lives.
He loved spending time at the family cabin at Pine Mountain and at Winter Quarter’s in St. George, with family and dear friends. He and his wife Barbara were faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and were called to serve three years in the Liberty Stake Eighth Ward. He leaves a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion. We his family, honor him for his unselfish dedication to each of us and for the noble life he has lived. We will greatly miss him!
Fred is preceded in death by his parents; Sister’s Lorraine Howell and Beverly Lever. He is survived by his wife Barbara and their four children, Terry Cortese (Jan), Julie Duncan (Gary), Linda Thomas (Sam), Jim Cortese (Renee), and his eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. Our family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at The Wellington and The Silverado for their kindness and loving care of our father.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday, January 23 at Valley View 12th Ward, 2125 Evergreen Avenue in Salt Lake City, Utah.
