1937-2020
Frederick Lenk Jackson, beloved grandson, husband, father, and grandfather passed away on December 20, 2020. He was born December 16, 1937 in the Bronx Borough of New York City, to Charlotte Lenk. He was raised by his grandparents, Oma and Grandpa Hornickel, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Charlotte later remarried and lived with her husband in California and Colorado with Fred’s half-sisters, Carolyn and Shirley.
Growing up with his Grandparents in Salt Lake City, Fred learned to work hard by helping to support his grandparents with multiple jobs. When he wasn’t helping around the house, he participated in sports including football, track and swimming. His favorite track event was the 100-meter dash, in which he excelled. He began his love of music as a youth playing harmonica, guitar, and violin. Fred’s grandparents did not own a television, so he would make faces at himself in the mirror for entertainment.
From January 1958 to August 1960, Fred served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the West German Mission. Following his mission, he met Jeanette Johnson in December of 1960 while attending the University of Utah. They became engaged on Christmas Day in 1961 and were married in the Logan, Utah Temple on September 25, 1962. He has said, “the best thing that ever happened in my life was meeting my wife,” and they were very devoted to each other. Fred graduated with the Class of 1964 from the University of Utah with a degree in Accounting and a dual minor in Economics and German. Fred also served during this time with the National Guard in Utah.
Following his graduation, Fred worked in various accounting-related positions and eventually ended up working in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Finance Department for many years. In his spare time, he liked to fish, acquire model trains, spend time at his cabin, garden, and sing. He enjoyed competing and traveling with barbershop groups in Salt Lake City and St. George. Fred and Jeanette moved to Washington, Utah after retirement. Fred’s love of gardening extended through retirement and he spent most days in the yard of his St. George home planting a variety of roses and cacti. Other loves of his life included chocolate, cheese, the Utah “Utes”, and his German heritage. Fred and Jeanette also served together in the Family History Center in St. George.
Fred is survived by his wife, Jeanette, four children Carol (Greg), Thomas (Carol), Shawna (Johnny), and Glenn (Lori), 21 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his son, Steven Frederick Jackson (1964-2011).
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am. Due to the Covid restrictions limiting the number of people attending, the services will also be live-streamed through Wasatch Lawn Mortuary at: www.facebook.com/wasatchlawnmemorial
