His favorite pastime by far was golf, which he enjoyed since he was a young boy. Gary was a focused golfer with a quiet disposition and excelled as an individual and in team play, winning a good many local golf tournaments over the years with four hole-in-ones to his credit. Also a great mogul skier and participant in bowling leagues with his favored ball.
Gary attended Whittier Elementary and Lincoln Jr. High School. As a South High Cub, he lettered in football his sophomore year, along with golf and wrestling all three years. He also played trumpet in Dance Band and was a cheerleader during his junior and senior years. When his brother, Blaine, razzed him about giving up football for cheerleading, Gary answered by executing a surprise standing back flip on the spot.
Gary entered the University of Utah on an academic scholarship, graduating in 1973 with a degree in Accounting from the College of Business. A devoted Ute, he later purchased lifetime Alumni Association memberships for himself and his Ute siblings.
While attending the U of U, he worked night shifts at the Union Pacific Railroad as a clerk and progressed to become an engineer driving the trains. Following retirement from the UPRR, Gary then pursued 18 peaceful years working outdoors at Rose Park Golf Course in maintenance and loved every minute of it. Of course, golfing on the side was a sweet bonus.
He was also there for Mom, following the passing of her ”Benny.” Gary and Mom enjoyed puzzling and, undoubtedly, watched countless televised golf, basketball and football games.
As tradition would have it in the Sorenson household, a PGA tournament was especially honored with a pot roast on the burner and, unbeknownst to typical raucous Sorenson behavior, Sunday golf warranted a quiet hush from the fringe as if you were actually on that course watching a pro sink a putt for the win! Then, all mayhem would break loose.
We will miss Gary's quiet love, his weekly TGIF texts, his Christmas cards, lunches together at Crown Burger, where we could literally talk for hours, a round of golf on any day and that pleasant smile of his that you knew was genuine.
Though Gary faced challenges in life, he didn't let them alter his ability to be a good soul, a good friend, a good neighbor, a good brother and son. He is loved and will be missed by many who knew him.
We celebrate his life. God Bless you Gary!
Gary is survived by his brother, Blaine (Linda) Sorenson, and sister, Jana (Rob) McQuay, as well as many nieces and nephews and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents, Benny and Leola Sorenson, as well as his brother, Jay Sorenson.
The family wishes to thank the caring doctors, nurses and Hospice Care at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah and, also, the caring staff at The Inn Between.
A graveside service will be held in Gary's honor on April 15, 2026 at 10 a.m. at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park & Mortuary at 3401 Highland Drive, Millcreek, UT 84016.
