Derek and our family would like to thank the phenomenal care provided to him in the ICU at Intermountain Medical Center, specifically Cara Thompson.
Derek is survived by his mother Sherri L Mac Gillvray (Tim), his children Whitney and Jordan Buchi, his siblings Tami Buchi-Yingling (Rocky), Brett Buchi (Jodi), Kristin Tillotson (Shane), Erin Buchi Thomas (Vance), Traci Buchi McDaniel (Chad), in addition to twenty adoring nieces and nephews and their families. Derek was preceded in death by his father Douglas O’Brien Buchi and his nephew, baby Douglas.
Derek was born on April 8th, 1977 in Helena, Montana to Douglas and Sherri Buchi. He spent most of his life in Utah. He was married to Michelle Hoss for ten years, in which time they were blessed with two beautiful children, Whitney Ann Buchi and Jordan Derek Buchi, who meant the world to him.
Derek struggled with depression and addiction from a young age. He felt so deeply for everyone and related especially with those that had experienced and been challenged with obstacles that he had personally battled. That sincere empathy is what led him to start a career as a substance abuse counselor, where he helped countless people. Most of those who met Derek loved him instantly. He was genuine and had a way of connecting with others. He was passionate towards everything he did. He was funny and enjoyed making people laugh. Derek loved his kids, his family, baseball, and BYU football. He had a HUGE HEART and an undeniable testimony of his Savior. Derek, we love you more than words. Be FREE brother. #BuchiStrong
