Jana Redden Garrett peacefully returned to her heavenly home on May 3, 2026. Our family finds comfort in the knowledge of the Plan of Salvation and the promise that families are eternal through our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Jana was born on June 17, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Richard and Ina Redden. She spent much of her life in Salt Lake City, where she built deep roots, and later lived in St. George, Utah, for over 20 years before returning to Salt Lake City in her final months.
She attended South High School and later studied at the University of Utah, where she was a proud member of the Delta Gamma sorority. Jana’s love of beauty and style led her to ZCMI, where she modeled, coordinated fashion shows, participated in merchandise buying, and mentored many young people involved in the store’s programs.
Jana went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and her master’s degree from Brigham Young University, both in the field of education. She devoted the heart of her career to the children of the Granite School District, teaching elementary school (K–6), where she impacted countless young lives. She loved teaching, loved children, and had a gift for making each student feel seen, valued, and capable. Her influence extended far beyond the classroom.
Jana was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and had a deep faith in both spiritual and temporal matters. Her life reflected quiet faith, kindness, and a sincere desire to serve others. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel heard, valued, and never alone.
In her later years, Jana courageously managed multiple sclerosis. She bore this illness with grace and beauty, without complaint, and faced each day with quiet resilience and faith. Her strength in the face of adversity was an example to all who knew her.
Jana married David F. Garrett, and together they raised their son, James, born in 1979. The marriage later ended in divorce. She spent many of her retirement years exploring the world with her mother and sister, fueled by a deep love of travel and adventure. Above all, Jana was a proud mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend. Her love for her family was pure, constant, and unconditional.
Jana is survived by her son, James (Maria), and her grandchildren, Katelyn and Sam. She is also survived by her niece, Kathy (Brennan), their daughter Mailee, and nephew Richard Spencer. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard “RT” Redden, and sister, June Spencer.
A gathering to celebrate Jana’s life will be held on May 15, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary (3401 South Highland Drive, Millcreek, UT 84106), followed by interment.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Jana’s life by doing acts of kindness for others.
Our family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the love, prayers, and support shared during this time.
