John Paul Jones, 86, of Taylorsville, Utah and born in Clear Creek, Utah, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025. Born on December 20, 1938, to Melvin Edward Jones Sr. and Doris Thorpe, John lived a life filled with love, adventure, and dedication to his family and community.
Raised in the rugged beauty of central Utah’s coal country, John developed a deep passion for the outdoors. He cherished spending time hiking, hunting, and fishing in the mountains he called home. His love for nature was a gift he shared generously, creating legendary memories with his sons, nephews, and nieces during countless outdoor adventures.
On January 11, 1974, John married the love of his life, Kay Hoyt, and together they built a life rooted in love and family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Kay; his sons, Clint Jones (Mandy) and Justin Jones; and his three beloved grandchildren, Lila, Sawyer, and Briar Rose, who became one of his greatest joys as he watched them grow and embark on their own new adventures. John was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Edward Jones Sr. and Doris Thorpe; his brothers, Melvin Jones Jr. and James “Jimmie” Jones; his sister, Pat Summers; and his loyal dog, Ruger. He is also survived by his beloved lab, Gunner, who will deeply miss the endless supply of treats John always provided.
Known as “Grumpy” by his trucker handle, John’s stern facial expressions belied his true nature as a kind soul, always ready to share a good laugh. For over 40 years, he worked as a long-haul truck driver, traveling to far-off places and embracing the open road. In his final decade, he worked at Lowe’s, where his warm personality and genuine kindness earned him many friends among coworkers and customers alike. Never without his trusty pocket knife, John was always prepared for any task, and his family is now unsure how to carry on without his ever-ready resourcefulness.
John’s final advice to all was simple yet profound: be kind to your family, your friends, and to yourself. His legacy is one of love, laughter, and a deep connection to the land, people, and animals he held dear. His stories, wisdom, and adventurous spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your local animal rescue in his honor.
