

On Thursday, February 05, 2015, John Bennion McKean lost his long, hard-fought battle to overcome his weakened body that was damaged by Rheumatoid Arthritis and Strep A, flesh eating bacteria. In 1999 his doctor said that “he was the sickest man that ever lived”. After 26 years, bi-lateral amputations, profound hearing loss, impaired cognitive skills and painful deteriorating back, John has found peace and freedom from his earthly cares. He will be remembered fondly for his strength of will, sense of humor and his exceptional creative skills. John was born August 30, 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Franklin L. McKean Jr. and Eileen Cannon Bennion McKean. John is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Sally Burtoft McKean, daughters Shawna Norris and Angie Scott Cottrell (Lynn), Becky McKean, Julie Prince (Bill), brothers Nick (Kathleen), Paul (Rosalia), Bill (Diane), Dan (Suzanne) and David (Linda), brother-in-law Fred Burtoft (Linda), Marsha McClure and Susan Hogge (Mike) sisters-in-law as well as many nieces and nephews . He is preceded in death by his parents, a niece Elizabeth and nephew Joseph. John’s legacy of faith, his undaunted courage and determination to continually move forward in his life and his strength of will, remain as a powerful example to those who love him. Tuesday Feb. 10, a visitation will occur from 6-7pm with the Roseary being said at 7pm at Wasatch Lawn. The funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, February 11, At 11am at St. Olaf’s Catholic Church, 1800 S and Orchard Drive, Bountiful, Utah. John’s ashes will be scattered near his beloved grandparent’s family ranch where he spent many wonderful childhood days. The McKean family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at IMC for their excellent care of John during his final battle.
