Gina - When I first came to Utah eye applied for the CJA panned.  I was told by Judge Alba to go get learning materials  from a guy name Larry and to study them.  Larry gave me a floppy disk on the face of which was a sticker with the words “Only the Few Survive.”  He gave me the disk with a great smile and told me he would be happy to help me.  He had a wonderful sense of humor!

As it turns out that was the name of a seminar he had given. Throughout the years he continued to be a great friend, advisor, and mentor. He will be missed. 

I will forevermore hear in my head Larry’s sigh followed by the words, “It was WONDERFUL.” Because it was. 

The world feels a little emptier now, but many lives are better because Larry was in them. Mine especially.

we are so so sorry to hear of Larry's passing.  He was a man with a good heart, generous spirit, and compassion for all. Great guy with the gift of gab. I watched him defend a helplessly indefensible criminal defendant when I clerked at the federal courts, doing what he could when he had nothing to work with. Later we were law partners. He knew everyone and had a story for everything. (I'm not sure I agree with the assertion that most of his stories were true.) We'll miss you, Larry. Thanks for being a friend.

As a student at BYU Law School, I was one of the fortunate many to learn the fine art of trial lawyering from Larry.  He was such a popular and dynamic professor that it was hard to get into his classes.  Years later, when I worked at the United States Attorney's Office, Larry and I appeared as opposing counsel on several cases.  Larry always exemplified the highest standards of professionalism and civility, and he always had a colorful and amusing story to share that made interacting with him so wonderful.  I feel blessed to have called Larry a friend and a colleague.  His impact on Utah's legal community will be felt for decades to come. 

Larry and I were good friends for many, many years.  We first met as opponents in court; me as a federal prosecutor and Larry as a defense counsel.  We were on opposite sides of many cases.  But we were opponents, never enemies.  Indeed, we enjoyed mutual respect and soon became friends.  We shared many stories, laughs, and lunches.  Larry had me as a guest speaker in his BYU law classes, and I returned the favor by having him speak in my classes.  Larry was a wonderful friend, and a great human being.  He was much more than just a great lawyer.  I send my deepest sympathies to Gina and Jacob.  I know he loved you dearly, and was so proud of you.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.

While you don’t know me very well, I feel as though I know you for all the stories Larry shared throughout the years I worked for him.  I am so very sorry to hear of his passing.  I will always remember him for his kindness, gregarious nature and laughter; the way I knew he was on his way to my desk from the whistling, humming and singing coming down the hallway – always with a smile.  I listened to countless fishing stories – although I don’t fish – entertained nonetheless by his storytelling.  He loved sharing about his “topless tours” in the convertible and the many trips with friends.  It was always fun to see the photos he’d taken (of fully clothed people and topless cars – clarifying for the readers, though I’m sure he’d get a kick out of the insinuation.  Classic Larry!)  One of the traditions I enjoyed every year during the holidays was the way he’d place a menorah on the counter for Hanukkah – a lovely reminder of inclusion and diversity at the firm.   

I always thought it was the sweetest thing the way he’d answer the phone with a smile in his voice whenever his “bride” or his son called.  You two truly lit him up.  

Larry will be greatly missed and remembered fondly by many.  My thoughts are with you and the family.

Larry was a quintessential gentleman, a lawyer's lawyer, and a consummate story-teller.  He will be missed by many.  
Gina, Larry made it clear how much he loved you and his family.  I hope you find comfort in knowing that, and in knowing how many others share your loss and grieve with you at this difficult time.

I’m so sorry to hear of Larry’s passing. In the early 2000s as a new DOJ prosecutor, Larry was a formidable opponent, but an even more impressive human being. I always enjoyed my time opposite him in the courtroom but will remember even more the time he took to get to know me and the respect he showed me, especially so early in my career.

Dear Gina-

Larry was truly one of a kind. He was kind to a fault, funny and always ready to tell a good story. I loved our lunches together, where we discussed everything from fishing and travel to how to make the world a better place personally and professionally. He will always a have a special place in my heart as he meant so much to so many.
