Ruth Adele Peterson Ewers bid farewell to her aging body in the early hours of February 26, 2020. She left this world with a brilliant mind and great courage. She left on her own terms, as she always lived her life. Ruth was born May 18, 1932 in Washington, D.C. to Guy and Alice Steenberg Peterson. She attended Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio, receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology. She met the love of her life while in college and was married to James Russell Ewers for 65 years. He preceded her in death by three months.
Ruth was always an amazing seamstress, much to the dismay of her children, who wore beautifully crafted “hand sewn” clothing of much better quality than store bought. Once her kids were mostly grown, she took a job at Gentler Times, a quilt shop, where she developed an incredible “hobby”. This led her to a wonderful community of friends in the quilting universe, and to hundreds of lovely works of art. (She leaves behind several impeccably maintained sewing machines for her children, most of whom can’t even sew on a button).
The four of us are proud to have called her Mom: Kim (Carol Peckham) Ewers, Kathy (Kurt) Dudley, Jennifer (Andrew) Hinchman, Gary (Alicia) Ewers. The six grandkids, Alexis and Brynne Hinchman, Kayla and Peter Dudley (Ariana Montano) and Irie and Isaac Ewers have been hard hit by losing both Grandpa and Grandma this winter but know that their sorrow stems from great love. Ruth’s first great grandchild, Alivia Dudley, is due to arrive next month and would have loved to have kissed that sweet great-grandbaby’s cheeks. It was just another indication of how worn out she had become. She also leaves her sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Ann Snelling and her husband Le, her brother-in-law Charles and his wife Joyce, as well as nieces; Chris Lash and Terri Ricci and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Melillo, and in laws, Marguerite and Arthur Gregg.
We would especially like to thank Mom’s quilt guild and the incredible friends we all call family. Special thanks to Jan, who was Mom’s “adopted” daughter, Leigh, Janet, Betty Jo and so many others, you know who you are. Thanks to her neighbors whom she loved dearly and to Barbara, who took her beloved cat Tuxedo. Special thanks to the amazing staff at St. Mark’s ER and ICU departments for their exceptional care of Mom and for providing a peaceful and dignified passing. We laughed and cried throughout her final hours, as she continued to provide last minute instructions until she drifted off. So like Mom to be in control to the end.
Due to recent events, a Celebration of a Life Well Lived will be postponed. For information regarding the future service with her favorite foods…..hog dogs, baked beans and lemon desserts, please email Kathy at [email protected] or Jenny at [email protected].
In lieu of flowers please consider donating in her name to the Fourth Street Clinic or a charity of your choice.
