"Sowb"
Wendell M. Sowby passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 28, at home due to lingering health conditions. He was born on February 26, 1935 in Nephi, Utah, to Marcus and Marie Sowby.
Sowb has been a wonderful caring husband to Laurene Allred since 1954. He was a proud South High Cub, class of 1953, taking the Basketball State Championship in 1952 and named as an individual All-State Player in 1952 and 1953. The relationships Sowb developed on these teams have lasted through the decades. He also competed in the All-Church Basketball tournament for many years. He also spent countless hours as a referee and umpire for basketball and softball.
Sowb was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he had the opportunity to serve. He spent 20 years volunteering for the Salt Lake Tribune's Sub-for-Santa program, primarily late every Christmas Eve. He worked hard in providing for his family, was a successful salesman in Utah and Idaho with an amazing memory for product numbers and customers, and happily retired from Whirlpool Corporation.
Golf was an important pastime, as was mowing his lawn twice a week to keep it at just the right length. He loved being on the lake fishing with friends or boating with his family. Together with many dear couples, Laurene & Sowb enjoyed playing card games, telling jokes, dining, and traveling. The last 10 years took them to St. George often for relaxation.
Sowb served his family in many ways, including getting the dishes cleaned up at family parties before you could blink an eye or quietly surprising a loved one with a much needed appliance. He liked to find solutions quickly. And he was a regular supporter at ball games, graduations, and piano recitals alike. We love you, Dad!
He is survived by his wife Laurene Allred Sowby; daughter, Pam (Tyler) Housley; and sons, Ken (Dana) and John Sowby; brother-in-law, Bryce Dee (Gaylyn) Allred; sister, Janet (Dennis) Vacarro; sister, Charlene (Glenn) Larsen. He will also be missed by his 7 grandchildren, 2 nieces, 4 nephews, and 1 great-granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Sowby.
Friends may visit on Tues, July 5 from 6:00-8:00 at Wasatch Lawn or Wed, July 6 from 9:30-10:30 at Valley View Stake Center, 4395 S. Albright Drive (2145 E).
