Janet was born in Park Slope, Brooklyn, to Irma and Frank Viverito. She was christened and attended school at Saint Saviour Catholic Church. The family later moved to Lake Panamoka, Long Island. Janet attended high school in Port Jefferson, New York; she is a “59er.” It was the 1950s, and high school was the most wonderful experience any young person could have; she was a class officer and very fond of acting in school plays.
Janet attended the College of Notre Dame of Maryland in Baltimore.
In 1963, Janet married Neal R. Tempel, a classmate from Port Jefferson. The couple was blessed with two children, Christine and Steven.
Janet served as a Museum Director at Brookhaven National Laboratory. She not only built the science museum but several school outreach programs that still run today.
To further her career, she attended Bank Street College in New York City, where she earned her master’s degree in museum management, with honors. Janet retired from BNL in 2000 and enjoyed life every day.
Janet joins her son and parents in Heaven and continues to watch over her “sweetie” Joe whom she met at BNL, her daughter Christine, three beautiful grandsons, Logan, Tucker and Walker, her sisters Robin and Muffin, cousin John, nieces, nephews and too many friends to list.
Janet and Joe spent many happy times golfing, traveling and taking cruises. They enjoyed gourmet cooking and were definitely foodies.
A celebration of life will be held in the warmer weather.
In lieu of flowers, please honor veterans in Janet’s memory.
