

Marion Theresa Carty Byer was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 20, 1925 to Henrietta Schestad Carty and Cyril Fitz-Morris Carty. She was the second of six siblings. As a child, she attended public school and she eventually graduated from Bushwick High School in Brooklyn. She continued her education by pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from the esteemed Hunter College in Manhattan. After graduation, she worked as a caseworker for the New York City Department of Social Services. After having met the love of her life, Marion married Dudley Allen Byer on June 14, 1952. Their marriage produced two son's, Michael Allen Byer and Wane Joseph Byer. While raising her family, Marion obtained a position as an elementary school teacher. When her family moved to Hollis, Queens, Marion continued to teach while completing a Masters in Library Science at Queens College. Eventually she secured a position as a school Librarian, a professional role that she fulfilled until her retirement in the late 1980's. Shortly after her retirement, Marion and Dudley moved to Leisure Glen in Ridge, New York. Deservedly, Marion was able to cultivate new friendships and pursue a variety of interests. She joined the Leisure Glen choral group. She enjoyed reading her treasured biographies. She played tennis and became a member of a local bowling team along with her husband, Dudley. Marion was also an avid traveler. She visited countries in Europe, North Africa and the Caribbean. Marion also loved casinos and made yearly trips to Las Vegas, Foxwood and Atlantic City. She enjoyed listening to classical Music and she often practiced playing music on her piano.
Marion Carty Byer is predeceased by her beloved husband Dudley Allen Byer, her brother James Edward Carty II, and her sister Olivia Victoria Carty. She is survived by her sons, Michael and Wane; her daughters-in-law, Larisa and Beverly; her granddaughters Marisa, Desiree and Maria; and her siblings Anna Carty Brown, Jean Carty Ratteray, Alicia Carty Garnet, John Carty, Thomas Carty and Lucy Carty Blue. Marion also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. She will be dearly missed!

Reposing at the O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 1001 Rt. 25A, Miller Place, L.I. Visitation Monday (July 28, 2014) from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass Tuesday 10 am. at St. Mark's R.C. Church, Shoreham, N.Y. Interment to follow at Calverton National Cemetery.
