It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Richard George Ruppenstein, lovingly known as "Doc Rich," at the age of 70. Richard passed away peacefully on September 16, surrounded by his devoted family.
Richard leaves behind the love of his life, Jocelyn, with whom he shared 46 wonderful years of marriage. Together, they built a life filled with love and joy, which lives on through their children: Joseph, Nicole, and her husband, William. Richard was predeceased by his beloved son Jason, with whom he is now reunited. His cherished grandchildren, Charlotte, Isabella, and Jason, will forever remember their grandfather's love and guidance.
He is also survived by his siblings, Robert Ruppenstein and Linda Eddy, his in laws and many nieces and nephews, as well as his "baby girl" Bailey, his faithful dog who was always by his side.
Richard proudly served his country as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy from 1974 to 1980, stationed aboard the USS Constellation. His time in the Navy was marked by dedication and a commitment to caring for others, a value that carried through to the rest of his life and career.
Richard was a man of many passions, from gardening to flying, camping, and cross-country traveling. His sense of adventure and love of life led him to explore the world with curiosity and generosity. Whether tending to his garden or setting out on a trip, Richard approached life with the same care and dedication he brought to his family and community.
A lifelong volunteer, Richard served with the Miller Place Fire Department in the late 1970s to early 1980s. His spirit of service extended beyond his community; he provided medical services in Haiti, helping to establish a school, and in Thailand, offering aid after the devastating tsunami. Richard lived a life of compassion and selflessness, always seeking to help those in need.
Born and raised in Ridgewood, Queens, Richard spent his summers in Miller Place, forming the foundation of a life deeply connected to his roots. He attended PS 88 Elementary School, JHS 93, and Martin Luther High School before graduating from Stony Brook University as part of its second graduating class of Physician Assistants. Throughout his career, Richard was dedicated to providing first-class healthcare to the underserved, always living up to his belief that action speaks louder than words. He truly "walked the talk."
We are all better off for having known Richard, whose legacy of love, service, and kindness will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to have crossed his path.
His impact will never be forgotten.
