

Serge was an accomplished surgeon and dedicated physician, as well as a devoted father to his three daughters and loving husband to his wife, Rasma. He was a lifelong lover of poetry, military history, opera, and all types of literature, being a voracious reader who became an author later in life. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family.
Serge was born in Paris on January 24, 1924, and was educated at the University of Paris (Sorbonne), where he completed his medical degree. Following medical service in Algeria, he immigrated to the United States to continue his professional development, particularly in cardiovascular surgery. Notably, he worked as a research fellow at the Laboratory of Experimental Cardiovascular Surgery, at the University of Minnesota Medial Center under the famed Director, C. Walton Lillehei, MD. Future assignments brought Dr. Dos and his young family to Manhattan and the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, Department of Surgery where he became well known for his kind bedside manner, strong passion for his field, and a keen interest in the history of surgery. His lengthy career spanned several decades and multiple hospitals including the State University of New York at Stony Brook and ending at Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan allowing him to enjoy his reputation as a well-known and well-loved doctor both on Long Island and in New York City.
In 2021, at the age of 97, Dr. Dos authored a book on French surgery of the Eighteenth Century, an accumulation of his extensive research on the subject, amassed over many years.
Serge is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rasma Kupers Dos, a Latvian artist. He is also survived by his daughters, Soshana, Yasmin, and Maiya, as well as his grandchildren, Jackson, Elsa, Cooper, and Bode.
