Luella joined the family of Eugene and Delcie Sublett in 1961. She attended Warrington and Bancroft Elementary in Minneapolis, and in 1970 the family moved to Ogilvie, Minnesota to begin a family farm. There she attended Ogilvie elementary and high school. She played volleyball in high school and was a flag bearer in the marching band. On the farm, she worked hard, tending to the family’s wide variety of animals and doing farm chores. After high school, she attended Cambridge College of Healthcare & Technology, where she studied hospital services. After graduation, she gained a position at Cambridge Hospital as a surgical support technician.
She moved to Minneapolis in 1981 where she remained until her death. She worked for Lutheran Brotherhood for many years. In 2002 she met the love of her life and married Alan H. Williams Sr. in 2004.
Her spiritual journey included being baptized in the Pentecostal faith at early age. Later she attended Baptist churches and maintained her own spiritual connection to the Lord. She was an avid sports fan and attended many Lynx games. She also cheered enthusiastically for the Minnesota Timberwolves and Vikings. She loved pets, especially Bailey, their Staffordshire terrier who she adored.
She loved collecting a variety of items and had a lovely collection of angels and breast cancer memorabilia. Luella had a hearty laugh, was always able to speak her mind, and was fun to be with. She was a source of strength to her family, never missing a birthday, anniversary, or holiday, and was well known for sending her cards out well in advance.
As a three-time breast cancer survivor, in 2013 she was part a group that established a coalition including The Breast Cancer Education Association (BCEA), Sage, Stairstep Foundation, and health systems to provide mobile mammography & clinical follow-up service to bring breast health education & screening to African American churches. Then in 2014 Luella became member of African American Breast Cancer Alliance (AABCA). In 2016, Luella was appointed to AABCA's Board of Directors and was involved in the business of helping AABCA spread the word about breast cancer in Black women. Luella was honored with the Annette Lamars Volunteer of the year award in 2023. In November 2025, at the AABCA Gala, she was honored as one of two Community "Sheroes.“ Luella left her mark on everyone who met her and loved her.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Eugene and Delcie Sublett, and her brother William Woods. She is survived by her husband Alan H. Williams Sr., stepchildren Alan H. Williams Jr; Derrimus S.J. Williams Sr., and Maynard D. Williams Sr., 7 step grandchildren, brother Eugene (Laurie) Sublett, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
