We are devastated to announce the passing of Bruce Hutchinson during the early hours of June 16th, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bruce is lovingly survived by wife Laurie, son Marcus & daughter Elyssa, mother Joan, sisters Melanie & Linda, brothers-in-law Harold, Sean & Greg. Also mourning Bruce's passing are many nephews & nieces, great-nieces, cousins, aunts, uncles & close friends. He was predeceased by his father Fred and brother Jim.
Born and raised in Fernie BC, Bruce was an avid outdoorsman whose passion was exploring the backroads, lakes and streams surrounding his hometown nestled in the Rocky Mountains. He loved to share countless stories of adventures he had while growing up in the Kootenays.
As a young adult, Bruce worked for Westar Mining . He moved to the coast in his late 20s; initially living & working in North Vancouver, then Port Coquitlam. Eventually, he settled in Maple Ridge where he worked for the maintenance department of Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows School District for over 30 years. Bruce met Laurie at Laity View Elementary whom he married in 1996. His son Marcus came along in 2000 and daughter Elyssa followed shortly after in 2001. Bruce retired in 2020 and recently moved to Mission.
While Bruce spent a great deal of his down time in Fernie and surrounding area, he also took every opportunity to hike, fish and explore the trails, lakes, rivers and ocean waters on the coast. Bruce enjoyed traveling as well. Surprisingly he loved Disneyland! Otherwise, while cruising and Mexico for deep sea fishing were his favourite vacation choices, Bruce often referred to our Europe and Peru trips as vacations of a lifetime. All were unforgettable experiences with family and close friends.
Bruce will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, coworkers and all who had the opportunity to know his gentle soul. Always remember, Bruce, you're stronger than you know. We love you to infinity and beyond!
Celebrations will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation in Bruce's memory.
