Georg passed away unexpectedly on December 7, 2018 in Vancouver, BC, after a brief illness. He leaves behind his loving wife, Janet (nee Olsen), and beloved daughters Katie (Mark), Clarissa (Billy) and Marta (Liam); grandchildren Althea, Gavin, Luke, Riley and Alden; sister Gisela; nieces and nephews Hans (Doris), Georg (Dani), Stefanie (Michael), Angelika (David); mother-in-law Jytte; sisters and brothers-in-law Jack (Lykke), Anne (Brian), Lise (Scott) and nieces and nephews Birgitte (Svend), Sara (Peter), Martin (Ida), Tomas (Ina), Anna, Charlotte and Hannah. He will be fondly remembered by his extended family in Canada, USA, Denmark and Germany. Georg was predeceased by his mother Maria Barrenbrugge. Georg was born in Ruhpolding, Germany, close to his cherished Alps. As a young man, he was educated in business and started his career in the field of electronics. He became an electrician and with an entrepreneurial spirit, he left Germany to travel the world with his first wife Baerbel and settled in Langley, BC, where Katie was born. After meeting Janet and her daughter Clarissa, they all moved to Fort Langley where they had Marta. Georg delved into many trades and interests including farming and owning a restaurant with Janet. He worked for a short while with his in-laws in their printing roller business before embarking on the import of eco-friendly building products. Georg found his niche as a pioneer in the organic coffee and tea trade in BC. He enjoyed a good conversation and kept in touch with many of the people he had met throughout his life. He was a loyal friend. Georg’s passions remained spending time outdoors, cycling, skiing, travelling, working on his projects and property in Mission. He treasured spending time with his family. A memorial service will be held at the Cedar Valley Mennonite Church in Mission, BC December 19th at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to CPAWS (Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society) or a charity of your choice.

I will cherish memories of the wonderful way you could pick up a conversation with Georg after a long absence and it seemed as if you had just had a moment ‘s pause to gather a thought before continuing. What a delightful fellow. Please accept our condolences.

The first time I met Georg was in 1968 at Munich where I just had started my studies together with a friend from my home town. We soon became close friends. Sometimes we went to the carpet shop where he was working and had talks about our life and our futures.

Georg had a car and sometimes we drove to Vorderriss where the Bavarian writer Ludwig Thomas grew up. We liked the untouched nature and we enjoyed very much sitting on the banks of the river Isar watching the flow of the water with the the Alps in the background. These moments are precious moments in life. You suddenly become aware of the flow of time. These are the magic moments when you become "entangled" with nearly everything around you and the persons you love. Only much later when I studied quantum theory I understood the meaning of entanglement.

I liked Georg's sense of humor, his quick-witted comments in his unique Bavarian dialect. With a simple "Ja, do schau her!" he could express astonishment, admiration, approval, irony, not having known, skepticism, understanding. He never lost his balance. His sense of humor was his life jacket. We both lived in a "patchwork" family with various nationalities, different roots and traditions. Moving, crossing borders, making new experiences makes a person more vulnerable. However it always broadens your horizon.

For many years we enjoyed his coffee he brought with him when he often came to Europe to see his mother. I remember the holidays my wife and I spent with Georg and Janet in France, at Rome, Ruhpolding, Mission. The last time we met each other was during Marta's and Liam's wedding in 2013. I will miss our regular talks via phone very much.

Lieber Georg,
