Kai Arne Berg

When Kai and his siblings were still young, they had to endure the hardship of WWll with the German occupation of Norway. Life was tough and food was scarce. Later on, Grandpa Arne brought the family to Canada to try and make a better life. Kai had to learn English, and with that, was able to get his Upholstery Trade by the time he was 16.

Living in Vancouver, Kai was working at a Furniture Factory honing his upholstery skills and moved up quickly to become foreman. While at a Luther League Convention in Calgary, Kai met the love of his life, Joan. They were married in a double wedding ceremony with Joan's sister, Lorraine and Doug Gibson on June 13, 1959. The wedding took place at first Lutheran in New Westminster.

While living in Vancouver, Kai and Joan welcomed their first son, Myron. A short time later, Grandpa Arne wanted his family to move to Outlook, SK to work alongside him at the Bakery he had purchased. It was not long till Randy and Ron were born. This is when the adventures of the three little blonde Berg boys began!!

The family was on the move again to Mission, BC. Kai had a very strong work ethic and this was evident in his wanting to provide for his family. He would work at an Upholstery shop in Maple Ridge from 8:00 am-1:00 pm. Then off to work for the Mission School Board from 3:00 pm-11:00 pm. After this, it was off to the Mission Family Bakery to work till 3:00 am. All this, and never a sick day! Must be the Lutefisk!! After Kai had given up working at the Bakery, he continued with the School Board till 1997. He had always loved working with his hands and stayed at the Upholstery shop till his full retirement in 2005.

Kai was an active member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church from the 8th and Dunsmuir location to the current location of 7th Ave. He was one of the men who helped with the building of this church and also helped with the building of different sites at Camp Luther.

Kai loved fishing and taking Joan in the camper van and later the motorhome to go up country for a well deserved get away. The boat was always in tow, and he would take Joan out on the water. One of his greatest interests were the classic cars of which he had owned a few. He would always attend the car shows in Mission and surrounding areas.

In 2018, Kai and Joan had sold their family home and moved into Carrington House in Mission. His loving wife, Joan, had passed away in 2021. Kai continued living there till his health had caused him to move to Marigold Gardens Care Home in Burnaby in February of 2026. He went to his Heavenly home at the Burnaby hospital on August 30, 2026.

Kai is survived by his children: Randy (Holly)Berg of Yorkton, SK, Ron (Taura)Berg of Port Coquitlam, BC, Daughter-in-law Gillian (Shawn)Vogt, of Mission, BC. Grandchildren: Stefan (Chantel)Berg of Calgary, AB, Amy Rose Berg of Brandon, MB, Lauren (Curtis)Ridder of Abbotsford, BC, Bryn Kunz of Mission, BC, Kristian (Katie)Berg of Edmonton, AB, Taeryn (Jadon)Deffenbaugh of Fort Langley, BC, Abigail Berg, Port Coquitlam, BC, Karson Berg of Mission, BC, Evan Berg of Port Coquitlam, BC; and one Great-Grandson, Ivan Kunz (Bryn's) of Mission, BC. His siblings Sonja Roste of Strathmore, AB, Norris (Heather)Berg of Kamloops, BC, sister-in-law, Lorraine Gibson of White Rock, BC; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Kai is predeceased by his parents Arne, Jenny and step Mom, Signe; his in-laws Kristian and Nina Johansen, Brother-in-law, Vern Roste, Brothers-in-law, Percy Johansen and his wife, Gudrun, and Doug Gibson, his infant son and his oldest son, Myron.
