WALKER, Shirley Louise (nee Heslop) – It is with great sadness that we announce Shirley’s passing on November 15, 2020 at the age of 88. She passed away peacefully with family at her side, at Mission Memorial Hospital. Shirley was born June 9, 1932 in Trail, British Columbia.
Shirley was an adventurous pioneer who enjoyed embarking on new experiences. She travelled Europe for several months in 1955 long before this became common practice for young people. She was a lifelong learner who immersed herself in many hobbies and interests including provincial certification as a “Master Gardener”. Shirley was often seen behind a camera and her passion and gift for photography awarded her first place in a competition with her picture titled “Sidewalk Artist”.
She met George William (Bill) Walker in the 1970’s and they enjoyed 28 wonderful married years together. They loved to travel internationally, took countless trips in their motor home, and enjoyed socializing with their many friends. Shirley and Bill were generous supporters of the Mission Community Foundation and initiated the GW Cooke Awards. During her retirement Shirley was intrigued with the original correspondence she inherited chronicling her maternal grandparents’ emigration from Norway. Her extensive research culminated in her book “From Sailing Ships to Spitfires” published in 2005.
Graduating from the St. Paul’s nursing program as a registered nurse in 1954, Shirley furthered her education at UBC specializing in Public Health. She spent the majority of her career as a nurse with Burnaby Public Health and maintained her connection with her graduating class by contributing to the organization of an annual class reunion. Their 65th reunion was captured by CBC news in 2019. A career change later in life saw her transition to a realtor. She is remembered as an energetic, intelligent, fun-loving and accomplished woman.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2006, her brother Edward (Ted) in 2018, her sister Marion Croizier in 2009, her mother Agnes in 1992 and father George William in 1970. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, step children and grandchildren, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A graveside service will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Mission Community Foundation.
