From a young age, Bitoy was in love with his family and friends. Son of immigrants, he set out with his mother Cyndy and father Cito to the United States where they escaped poverty and martial law. As a true Filipino, he embraced the extended families from which he came. He spoke of his love for his younger brother, Jok, determinedly trying to protect him from what might come in this new world. He idolized his uncles, loved his aunts and found friendship with his many cousins.
At the same time, Julian found his own way in America, blossoming into the silly, joyful and beautiful human being that was so beloved by everyone who knew him. Ultimately he lived the American dream. A U.S. Marine, a UC Berkeley graduate, a dreamer, an inventor, and a man who dearly loved his family. He cared for everyone around him, from the adults he helped to earn GEDs to the coworkers he mentored and befriended. Most of all, he gave his authentic self to his five nephews, Adam, Jax, Cruz, Toshi and Frankie, who he showered with love, affection and the purest light and laughter. His heart was full and big; he was generous and ready to support at any given moment. But he was also tender, and vulnerable; a true believer in love but afraid of what he might lose. As a result, he was fiercely independent, and he poured his energy into his life’s work in the medical and biological sciences. He was passionate about creating or developing the ideas that could one day save lives, earning several patents for his inventions.
What we will remember most about Julian, Uncle B, Bitoy, and what we will carry forward, is his embodiment of love. Being loved by Jules meant you showed your family and friends generosity, compassion, empathy, joy and sincerity at all times.
Julian was born on February 18, 1972 and was preceded in death by his father Ramoncito Cruzada, his grandparents Santiago and Obdulia Cruzada and Saturnino and Lourdes Dumlao, and his cousins Eric and T.J. Cruzada. He will be dearly missed by all of his family, including his mother Cynthia Dumlao Cruzada, and siblings Sue and Randy Dobo, Francis Cruzada and Les Davis and Laura Cruzada-Davis. His love will always be in the heart of his nephews: Adam Cruzada, Jaxon Taylor, Cruz Gonzalez, Toshi Gonzalez, and Francisco Mahal Garcia Cruzada. The Dumlao and Cruzada families will never be the same without him.
