Dr. B. C. Mason was my and my brother's pediatrician. His patience and caring were boundless. His clinical acumen was unrivaled. He was the reason that I became a physician referring to him by name in my medical school application essay. I called him a few times after becoming a physician for advice. He then spoke with me as though we were colleagues. He freely imparted advice and experiences in his life. He told humorous anecdotes about the New Orleans medical community. He also told me that when he was a student at U of C during WWII about the suspicion that something big was occurring on campus during the "Manhattan Project." I regret not having a cup of coffee with him as per his suggestion the last time that we spoke in 2006. During one of our last conversations, I asked him for personal advice. I caught myself and told him that I should not bother him with such matters. He simply replied that he never stopped being my doctor. Only my father and uncle impacted my life to such a degree. I will not forget my doctor, role model, colleague and friend - Dr. Mason.

Dr. Mason was a witty, charming, kind man, who was our three sons' pediatrician in the 1970s.  He gave our sons inoculations himself, and they seemed to feel no discomfort at all.  As well, he was comforting to me when on an occasion of taking my 10 year old son for a visit I mentioned that he had developed a slight twitch.  Should I be concerned?  He talked to Andrew a bit and then told a funny story of a man whose son had a twitch and after he told his son to stop twitching the boy started clearing his throat constantly, at which point the father said "Twitch again."  Both Andrew and I laughed and relaxed.  I think he had a genius for comforting young and old alike.  Would there were more like him.  
      I can well imagine that he was beloved by all of his family, and will be greatly missed.  My deepest condolences.

I first met dr mason on a scorching day in early September, 1957, when I walked to his office from our home on Foucher St. He had just opened his practice as I recall. I was a few weeks away from my due date. I don't recall who recommended him to me but we quickly established that we were both alums of the U of C. He suggested that I return home and contact him after the delivery.  I did so and we were friends forever more. My two sons are in their mid 50's now and never left his care until he insisted they were too old for a pediatrician. I remember most fondly that he never wore a white lab coat and treated them with such care that they were  never frightened or fearful. After they were grown, my late husband and I saw him at "Friends of Music" concerts at Dixon Hall. He was an exemplary physician. My children and I will never forget him. We will contribute to DWB in his memory. Condolences to his family.

I loved this man so much. I knew him from his visits to PetSmart with Mikey and then with Lil Bit.  We always visited at length when he came in. I adored his intelligence and soft-spoken good humor. When my grandchild was born, I felt compelled to have Dr. Mason see him, so I showed up at his apartment unannounced with an infant in tow. He was just such an extraordinary, gentle, exceptional human being. I just learned today of his passing. Oh, Doc, you were so many times the sole bright spot of my day. I shall always love you and miss you.

Dr. Mason took care of me and all my siblings in New Orleans.  As a child (born in 1971) I didn't really appreciate how great he was.  I got some notion of what a dedicated doctor he was when he was still making house calls to check on people in my family in the late 1990s.  I began to realize he was legendary in the local medical community.  I have good memories of Dr. Mason.  I liked the art in the waiting rooms at his office.  And, for whatever reason, I was always fascinated by his Bic pen with the retractable ballpoints with four different colors of ink.  The world needs more doctors like Dr. Mason.  May he rest in peace.

Brown Mason was one of the finest doctors I have ever known. A healer in the the true sense of the word. Dr. Mason was kind, patient, empathetic and generous. He was also one of the best diagnosticians in the city and I'm convinced that was because he combined his encyclopedic medical experience with the simple act of listening to his patient. We all received his full attention when with him and that encouraged our trust. He also had a wonderful sense of humor and great warmth. He was a fine human being and my family and I were fortunate to have been in his excellent care.

About a month ago a group of doctors were talking about some of the great doctors that New Orleans had and Dr. Mason's name came up.  One of the physicians knew that Dr. Mason was in Alabama and gave me his telephone number.  I had the great pleasure of talking with him by phone for almost an hour.  He was very clear and I was very proud that he remembered me not only as a patient but as a Tulane Medical student in 1976.  I was fortunate to have him as my pediatrician and as my teacher.

Dr. Mason was a client but a friend as well. I was always happy to talk with him about business or his gentle words of wisdom. (The Mannino Group)

Doc was my # 1 go to guy for sage advice about many things. He was the calmest man in a pinch I ever knew. RIP Doc. You are missed.

Brown Mason was a wonderful pediatrician and a fine man. I was lucky to have known him.

Dr. Mason was my doctor until I was a young adult. He helped me more than my words can ever describe. I love and miss him so much.

Warmth, compassion, and humor, all rolled into the best pediatrician ever.  Going to Dr. Mason's "house" was always an adventure, whether it was an earache or my (the mother) having stepped on a nail.  From their days as babies to early teens, Dr. Mason talked with the child directly.  I still chuckle remembering his remarking to my first born who was proudly but modestly wearing her first training bra which was in tatters:  "Why don't you get your mother to buy you a new bra?"  That broke the ice.  
Before the first sleep away camp, he told my children about his solo ride on the train to Chicago to attend university.  Whether healing wounds or inspiring courage, Dr. Mason was always a a hero.  He will be sadly missed.

Dr. Mason was  pediatrician for my three children before we moved to the north shore in the mid 80s.  He made me feel like  each child was so special and always took the time for a personal comment on each one no matter what the purpose of the visit.  And I will never forget that fan in his office to keep him from getting what ever ailed his small patients!

Dr. Mason was a wonderful doctor and friend.  I was older than most of my friends when I finally had a child and he gave me the confidence to embrace motherhood. I remember him fussing with me for not calling him at 2 in the morning when my daughter had an ear ache.  From then on, I followed his directions and called for the slightest concern.  He always responded happily.  My daughter is now in her 30s and I only wish that she could find another Dr. Mason when she begins to have children.  He has remained in our thoughts all these years and will continue to do so.  God bless you Dr. Mason - rest in peace surrounded by well deserved love.

New Orleanians lost a great doctor when Dr. Mason retired and now a bigger loss with his passing. This man was such a gentle and wonderful doctor. Seeing his picture in this memorial brings back so many memories of pediatric visits to his office. He was so wonderful to me and my children, always knowing the right thing to say to worried moms and we knew our children were in the most dedicated hands in a man like Dr. Mason. When my son was hit by a car when he was 10 years old and was in the hospital in traction for one month with a broken femur, Dr. Mason came every morning to see him. No one could have asked for better care and kindness in a doctor. We all will miss him and I wish I could have said goodbye and thank him one more time. Love you Dr. Mason

Dr. Mason came to Baptist Hospital when my son was born in 1981 and two years later came for an emergency illness.  He was so kind and gentle and beloved by all kids (and parents) he treated.  I will never forget his loving manner and words of encouragement and comfort.  He will be missed by all who were fortunate to know him.

Dr. Mason will always be remembered fondly. He was the doctor for my twin sons, and the person who held my hand as I was introduced to motherhood. My sons are 36 now, but I will always remember my son Donald when he was four. He came running to me, holding his ear, telling me he needed to see Dr. Mason right now. They had great confidence he would make them better.

Dr. Mason will always be a part of my heart...not to be forgotten.

I'm just one of the many, many New Orleans kids that Dr. Mason "raised".  I have fond memories of his little house/office on Prytania Street with Highlights magazine in the waiting room.  What a wonderful man.

A most loving and exceptional gentleman. He made his first housecall on my husband when he started practicing in New Orleans and then became part of our lives again when we had our five children. He was bright and warm and so reassuring to parents. Our lives were so blessed by his presence . We are thinking of you, his family, as you say goodbye to this wonderful human being. I only lived in New Orleans for a few years but was so fortunate to have him as my children's doctor for those years.  To this day, I still tell people in my company about the person and doctor he was.  If the world could only have more Dr. Mason's, our world would be so blessed and loved. I have no words to describe Dr. Mason. He was a one of a kind gentle soul. I know he is laughing, because I was a very nervous child and threw some kind of fits when I visited him.That soon faded because he won my Heart time and time again. I seen him to I was in my late 20;s and believe me when I said he always made the time for me. He became my first born Paul's pediatrician too. I truly loved Dr. Mason for his honesty. He gave me the warmth of his gentle hands like no other doctor, he could calm my nerves just seeing him. He was with my family when I had my open heart surgery and for so many other moments. My memories of him will linger in my Heart always. He always had great advice and a open ear. For so many years you would have thought that the Hayes were his only patients and the reason is because he made the time and took his time when we were with him on a visit to his office. Dr. Mason delivered me 40 years ago and was my first and only pediatrician.  My parents valued him so much that I bear his name (Mason) as my middle name.  A kinder and gentler caregiver we could not have wished for.  He will be dearly missed.

To the family of Brown C. Mason,
Brown Mason was an extraordinary doctor and an outstanding human being. He was with us every terrible step of the way when our son was dying at age 3 of cancer. Brown came to the house and stayed with us the night our son died. We named our child born thereafter for him, Michael Mason Pitts, out of our love and appreciation for all of Dr. Mason's caring. Brown Mason was a blessing and inspiration for so many of us.

Just one of thousands I know who have fond memories of Brown Mason. His kindness, patience and skill with children (and their worried parents) left an indelible impression on those who were lucky enough to know him. He is still remembered fondly and spoken of often and with great affection by those whose lives he touched.

I am so saddened by Dr. Brown Mason's passing. He took loving care of our first three children and I continued to call for his advice long after his retirement. With a smile on his face and words of wisdom, wearing his seersucker pants and loafers, he shared the lives of so many New Orleans children's. 
Rest in Peace, Dr. Mason.  You are in my heart and prayers forever.

Dr. Mason saved my life. I was one of his first patients. At the age of 18 months I developed a severe kidney disease. Even Dr. Mason thought I was going to die(having read a letter he wrote to a colleague, after he retired and sent my records). He has been much more than simply my doctor, he's been a friend & a mentor. I would drop in from time to time, just to visit. I most recently had lunch with him a little over a year ago. I'm so thankful to have been able to have him in my life and will truly miss him. I am a 61 year old man and my kidneys are finally failing, but I would not be here without the care from this extraordinary man.

I cannot say enough about this wonderful man. He was our three children's Doctor for over 24 years. He was also our friend, He was by our side thru "Open Heart Surgery, A Mysterious Fever, Asthma. As a mother
I could never thank him Enough for the Excellent care and comfort he gave us all. He was an Exceptional caring Doctor, Who always made time for the Hayes and all of his patients. I have so many wonderful memories. We were truly blessed when we cross paths with him. He was one of a kind. It was nice to know he was surrounded by the love of nieces and nephews. We thought of him over the years, many times since he moved to take care of his siblings, we felt like he was family. We loved him very much.  May he rest in peace.

Dr Mason took care of me my brothers and sister, and my children. I always felt he was listening to me and never rushed. He engaged you in a very caring fashion. He was my doctor until I was in my 20s. At some point he suggested I investigate the allied health professions at Delgado. Today I am a Respiratory Therapist. Thank you for taking care of my family Dr Mason.

I remember visits to Dr. Mason's office in the 60s and how very kind he was---also his motherly nurse. The office was in an old house and I always thought he must live in the rooms we weren't allowed to go into, which made the whole thing even more special. Making a donation to DWB in his memory. Dr. Mason was more than a pediatrician for my four children. He told me he "bonded" with his new babies while they were in the hospital. He taught me as a new Mom, when to worry and when to let him worry. I will be forever grateful for his loving concern and commitment he displayed day and night! He would say, "Just call my home." He touched the lives of so many with his kindness and love.

To Dr Brown Mason's family,
I am so very sorry for your loss. Dr Mason was my children's pediatrician beginning forty-six years ago today with the birth of my first child, Julie. Not only did he provide loving, gentle care to my three children, but he always listened to what I had to say because he said that mothers knew best what what wrong with their kids. He gave me the confidence that a young mother needed to be prepared for the ups and downs of parenting. Later, he joined the medical staff at UNO and his little Julie was there to see him again in college. I believe she did see our Dr Mason with his beloved pup in later years also. I am more than grateful that this kind gentleman was in our lives. Rest in peace, kind sir. You have done well.

This dear man exemplified care and compassion; he was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.  Those in New Orleans who were blessed enough to have Brown C. Mason, M.D. as their pediatrician are commonly referred to as "Brown Mason Babies".  An honorable title I am most proud of.
I fondly remember him showing up for many house calls; one felt better just seeing his large leather case come through the doorway.

when I was growing up my mom would take me into New Orleans on prytanian Street to go see Dr. Mason was a great pediatrician and I will miss him he took care of me and my brother, he made house call something rare in this day in age. I will surely miss him my prayers go to his family.

Dr. Mason was my pediatrician for years.  I remember how much we loved going to his office and receiving the Highlight magazines and suckers after our appointments.  Immunizations were not even scarey as his way was so kind and gentle.  God blessed us by putting myself and siblings in your care.  Much love for you Dr. Mason.

Dr. Mason was was my doctor, my children's doctor as well as many cousins...the best pediatrician anyone could have. He was so compassionate, gentle and caring.  I remember him apologizing for the cost of a vaccine when his cost went up and when I did the math I realized he didn't make a dime from that shot! We have often thought lovingly of him  over the years. God rest his soul.  Our condolences to his family

Dr. Mason was a wonderful physician and a very special friend to our family. His kindness, concern and care for all the children in our family will always be remembered. No matter the medical crisis, he was always there to provide the guidance and care that we needed.

I'm so sorry to hear about your family's loss. Dr. Mason was my childhood doctor and he was always so caring and kind. He always made me feel at ease and just had such a gentle way about him. I was thrilled when I discovered, while in law school at Loyola University, that he was then the school's doctor. So, he was my doctor again in my mid-twenties. And again, he was as caring and lovely as always. He was truly a kind and wonderful man who touched the lives of so many people in New Orleans. Rest in peace, Dr. Mason.

Dr. Mason was the most wonderful man!  I could not have survived twins, now 43, without his love and concern for me and them.  He came to our house at 3 in the morning to care for my son.  My favorite memory was when he met us at his office at 9 on a Sunday morning to see the sick twins.  He told us it was a hard decision to make to leave home because he had just put a carrot cake in the oven.  There are so many memories of such a loving man.  Rest in peace Dr. Mason.

Dr. Mason was my pediatrician many years ago. May his soul have eternal rest and may perpetual light shine upon him. Where have the days of home visits gone?

Dr. Mason was my pediatrician.  He was wonderful and sweet.  I was never scared to go see him for any appointments.  I ran into him a few years ago at the grocery and he still looked the same, and it was wonderful that he remembered me.  He was a sweet, caring, soft spoken man who will be missed.
