Cassie Champlin Steele, 75, passed away in Spanish Fort, Alabama on Thursday, May 20, 2021. She was a native and resident of Mobile, Alabama and lived in Point Clear, Alabama as well as Westminster Village in Spanish Fort. Cassie was born to Beverly “Champ” Champlin and Marion Cassie Lartigue. She graduated from Murphy High School, Queens College, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill – where she received a B. S. in Economics and was the President of Chi Omega Sorority and the North Carolina State Student Legislature, the latter of which made her a life-long Republican.
Cassie worked as the Administrative Assistant to Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, taught art classes, and became Vice President of S.S. Steele, Inc. She was a member of the Junior League of Mobile, a ladies Mystic Society of Mobile, Skyline Country Club, and presently, Lakewood Golf and Country Club. Cassie served as the President of the Bar Auxiliary, Mobile Home Builders Auxiliary, Mobile Museum of Art, and was an officer and Sunday school teacher at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church. Her many interests included preserving Mobile Bay, swimming, golf, art, reading, bridge, and fabulous friends. She traveled extensively, including a world cruise which included her two favorite stops: New York City and Hong Kong.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Joseph C. Sullivan, III (Stephanie) of Collierville, TN; granddaughter, Ella of Collierville, TN; two step-children, John David Steele (Kelly) of Mobile, AL; and Christy Lynn Steele (Bryan) of West Lafayette, LA.
Cassie died peacefully of cancer at her cottage in Westminster Village. Visitation will be at 9:30 on Monday, May 24, 2021 at Pine Crest Funeral home, before moving into the chapel for the funeral service. A reception will be held while the family attends a private mausoleum entombment.
