Christine Johnson Phares of Brandon, MS, formerly of Mobile, AL changed her address to her long awaited mansion on Easter, April 20, 2014 with family and friends by her side. Celebrating her homecoming are her parents, brothers (Alvin and Ulay), sister (Lois Couey) and her loving husband David Phares. Christine was born October 19, 1919 in Georgiana, AL. She was the baby of five children born to Lula and Joseph Johnson. She graduated from Georgiana High School and from there she went on to Birmingham Baptist and received her registered nurse degree. While she was in nursing school, she met and fell in love with a handsome man named David Phares. They married in 1941. After making homes in Gainesville, and Birmingham, they made their last home together in Mobile. There they made many friends and were faithful members of Springhill Baptist Church. Christine leaves behind many close friends in Mobile. Diane Berry, thank you for helping Christine move to Brandon making her apartment look great with your special designer touch. Also, we appreciate your many visits with flowers and goodies. Vera Edwards and Betty Moseley, we appreciate your continued friendship to her death. After many years of private duty and recovery room nursing, she retired with David and they began to travel and do a lot of entertaining. Christine also liked a foursome for a mean table of bridge on Fridays. After 62 years of marriage, David passed away and she soon moved to Brandon to be close to her only child Diane Proffitt and family. She became a part of the fellowship of First Baptist Church of Jackson and enjoyed the special attention from the ladies in the Hope and Joy Bible Sunday School class. One of the members, Dot Kerr, visited her on a regular basis while Christine was at the Emeritus at Heritage House. Christine was the epitome of a Southern lady. She was a kind, gentle and soft spoken friend, aunt, mother and grandmother. Proverbs 31 sums up her qualities best in that she had fear of the Lord, worked hard, had respect for her spouse, encouraged and cared for others. She is survived by a sister Zinvaline Wilkinson of Conyers, GA, daugher, Diane Phares Proffitt (Bill), a granddaughter, Jennifer Susan Proffitt of Brandon, a grandson, William Scott Proffitt (Andrea) of Sykesville, MD and a precious great-grandson William Lucas Proffitt also of Sykesville, MD. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews who were all so loving with their many thoughtful cards and phone calls. Thank you to her niece Gwinelle Phares Allums who while Christine was living in Mobile checked in on "Aunt Chris" and took her to many appointments and outings. While living in Brandon special thanks go to Jewel Ivers for her devotion and loving companionship to Christine while she was at the Emeritus at Heritage House. Jewel could always bring a smile to Christine's face. Special thanks to Dr. Nancy Campbell and her sweet nurse Amber, StaHome Hospice and the staff at the Emeritus who made her comfortable in her final days. Arrangements are through Radney Funeral Home in Mobile. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, April 25, 2014 from 5-7:30 pm. Family and friends are welcome to come to the celebration of her life with Dr. Jerry Gunnels, who was a close friend and pastor to Christine and David, officiating at the graveside services. They will be held at Pinecrest Cemetery in Mobile on April 26, 2014 at 11:00.
