Dan was a graduate of University Military School, The University of Alabama (BA), and Cumberland School of Law (JD). Following law school, he returned to Mobile where he began his legal career as an Assistant District Attorney for Mobile County. Dan then engaged in the oil and gas business as an attorney and landman.
Dan grew up on Dog River with a host of others that were fondly known as River Rats. Dan fished, frogged, swam, skied, shrimped, and crabbed in the summers. In the fall, winter, and spring he hunted doves, ducks, squirrels, deer, hogs, and turkeys. He fished in the Delta, country lakes, Dog River, and Fowl River. Dan spent countless hours with world champion wing shot Billy Perdue who instilled in him a great love of wing shooting. As a result, Dan became known as an excellent shot. He traveled to Scotland every year for more than 40 years to shoot and through those years he forged enduring friendships that continued until his death.
Dan’s love of nature and the outdoors ultimately led him to the field of conservation. From 1991-1998 Dan was Executive Director and in-house counsel for the Alabama Wildlife Federation. From 1998 until his death Dan was Executive Director and in-house counsel for the Alabama Forest Land Trust. Dan’s efforts with the Alabama Forest Land Trust contributed to the preservation of tens of thousands of acres for the benefit of future generations. He received many well-deserved awards for his conservation efforts. Recently, Dan’s greatest achievements were recognized with the Governor’s Conservationist of the Year Award. Knowing that he was to receive this award brought Dan great joy during the last weeks of his life.
Danny was a kind, generous, loving man of integrity who loved his family and close friends unconditionally.
