Captain Dan Hunter Negus - 66, passed away on September 12th, 2023, in Mobile, Alabama. He was born March 21, 1957, in Mobile, Alabama, to Rone L. and Ora C. Negus. Dan graduated Murphy High School in 1975 and attended the University of Alabama where he joined the DKE fraternity. Following college, he managed the Sportsman Marina in Orange Beach, Alabama until he built his own charter boat, The Island Girl, in 1981, that he captained for several decades winning countless tournaments such as Mobile Big Game Fishing Club, Pensacola Billfish Club, and the New Orleans Invitational, just to name a few.
Captain Dan had a loving passion for the outdoors starting at an early age that ended up developing into his career as a charter boat Captain and then as a farm manager for Dr. Rollins Tindall. Dan was an avid hunter and won many big buck contests, including the very last deer he harvested in Safford Alabama, a monster twelve point taking first place in the Camden Big Buck Contest. He also enjoyed duck hunting in Louisiana and turkey hunting in Alabama and Kentucky. When Dan was not fishing or hunting, he enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Captain Dan had an incredibly successful career as a charter boat captain and was loved and respected by many.
Dan Negus was preceded in death by his mother, Ora C. Negus, his father, Rone L. Negus, and his brother, Ronnie Negus. Surviving family members include his brothers, Edward Negus (Kandy) and Don Negus (Phyllis); niece, Brooke Gibson; nephews, Ben Negus, Barrett Negus, and Austin Negus; and many beloved extended family members. The family would like to thank SouthernCare Hospice for their care and dedication to aid Captain Dan in his final months of life.
Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the service hour.
