David Stephen Conrad ("D"), the most wonderful husband, father and grandfather, passed away on September 3, 2014. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on August 30, 1939, and lived in Mobile for 49 years. David was an active member of his personal and professional communities. He served as past Vice President and board member of the
Alzheimer's Association, past member of the Board of Directors of the Springhill Avenue Temple, past member of the Board of Directors of the Mobile Jewish Welfare Association, past Secretary and Vice President of the Mobile Bar Association, past member of the Board of Directors of the Alabama Trial Lawyers Association, member of the Alabama and Mobile Bar Associations, past Regional Board Member for the Southern District of the Commercial Law League of America, past member of the Board of Directors of the Mobile Medical Endowment Fund, past member of the Board of Directors of the Gulf Coast Conservation Association, past member of Ducks Unlimited, and past officer of the Board of Directors for Mobile Big Game Fishing Association. A graduate of the University of Alabama and Cumberland School of Law, David truly loved being a lawyer. He co-founded the firm of Conrad & Hammond, which is known today as Conrad Barlar & McCulloch. He was known throughout the legal community as a lawyer possessing the impossible balance of class, respect, and courtesy, while always maintaining a zealous advocacy for his clients. He was a mentor to countless other attorneys, providing counsel on personal and professional matters whenever requested. He ran his practice, and his life, with the philosophy that we ought to give others the benefit of the doubt unless or until they give us a reason not to. He approached every obstacle he faced with an unwavering positive attitude, the quintessential "eternal optimist." Known simply as "D" to his family, he held sacred his relationships with his wife, children, and grandchildren. The legacy of love and family he leaves behind is what defined and propelled him. He bestowed innumerable gifts upon all of them, but above all else left them with the love of family, the strength of those kindred bonds, and the ability and desire to carry on what he started. D loved spending time with family and friends. He especially enjoyed going to Orange Beach to the family house affectionately known as Camp David. This is a place that has numerous memories cherished by D and his family. David is survived by his wife, Norma, his son, Jeff (Chris) Conrad of Mobile, his daughters, Wendy (Neal) Aronson of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jill (Christopher) Hufnagel of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is also survived by his 7 grandchildren: Matthew, Will, and Ellie Aronson; Stephen and Sydney Conrad; and Owen and Henry Hufnagel.
