Born in Waynesboro, Mississippi, she was the beloved daughter of Tillman and Inez Holston.
In 1949, Jean caught the eye of her handsome soon-to-be husband, Vernon Oma “Fox” Humphrey. After only three weeks, the two married—beautifully defining the phrase “love at first sight.” Their life together was an extraordinary love story. As they traveled across the country, wherever they landed, Jean created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the kind of love that made everyone feel welcome.
Over the years, Jean worked for South Central Bell, sold real estate, and later became the proud co-owner of Fox’s Trolling Motors in Mobile, Alabama. Customers and friends cherished their visits to the shop, where Ms. Jean was always ready with wise advice, a listening ear, and her unforgettable warm smile.
Jean found joy in being on the move—taking drives simply to see where the road might lead. She had a special fondness for plants and flowers, bringing beauty into every space she touched. But nothing delighted her more than gathering with her family. A true Southern lady in every sense, she poured her heart into those she loved.
She carried herself with grace, gentleness, and a steadfast devotion to her family. In a tender twist of fate, she was reunited with the love of her life, Fox, on his birthday. As the cherished matriarch of her family, “MawMaw” treasured each member deeply. Her absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but her love and legacy will continue to shine in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
Emma Jean is survived by her children, Vernon Humphrey Jr. (Vicki), Jean Lovell (Tom), and Kim Spencer; her seven grandchildren, Collette Rivera (Pete), Garrett Humphrey (Rachel), Mitchell Lovell, Jake Spencer (Cora), Kayla Granberry, Natalie Carter (Wil), and Charlie Spencer (Angel); and seven beloved great-grandchildren. Each of them was a source of pride and joy to her, and her love for them will remain a lasting blessing in their lives.
A visitation to honor Ms. Jean’s life will be held on Sunday, November 30, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway. A private burial will follow at Pine Crest Cemetery.
