Gene was born on December 23rd, 1950 in Savannah, GA to Melba Bishop and the late Ernest Eugene Bishop Jr. He attended North Springs High School, Marion Military Institute, and graduated from the University of Georgia in 1973. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Order while at UGA.
Following in his father’s footsteps, Gene worked 25 years with Morrison’s Cafeterias where he was Vice President. He continued his career as the owner of Wings Sports Grille of Mobile for 14 years. Gene was known for his smile and friendly disposition which touched many lives. He was a master of the art of hospitality, having never met a stranger and making everyone feel like family.
Gene was a man of faith, always putting God first. He loved his family with his whole heart, and they were his greatest joy. He especially loved the job of being Granddaddy “G” to his 10 grandchildren. He would often say, “Life’s most underrated job is being a grandfather.” His unwavering strength and love will forever be instilled in our hearts.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anga Sargent Bishop. His three children, Ernest Eugene Bishop IV (Christy), Emilyn Bishop Baggett (Bryant), and Briena Bishop Hooper (Aubrey). His 10 grandchildren, Ernest Eugene Bishop V, Bry Baggett, Caroline Kirk Bishop, Jack Baggett, Pierson Hooper, Lanier Hooper, Bishop Baggett, Amelia Hooper, Davis Baggett, and Ellie Hooper. He is also survived by his mother, Melba Hooks Bishop and his four siblings Gary Nixon Bishop (Dawn), Timothy Craig Bishop (Kate), Julie Bishop Weinacker (Jimmy), Laura Bishop Escue (Mike), his sister in law Jenna Anne Sargent, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Ernest Eugene Bishop Jr.
