Gerry Gilbert Cooper, 81, passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2022 in Mobile, Alabama. Gerry was a graduate of Semmes High School. He and his brother, Royce, were the owners of Cooper’s Flooring and Interiors, which stood where Dreamland BBQ stands today. Gerry was a meticulous craftsman, and took tremendous pride in his work – which he emphasized by always standing by his work. What Gerry enjoyed most about his career, however, was the many people he met. Many became life-long friends, and would always turn to him for home improvement needs. Throughout the years, his crew became more like family than employees. Gerry stressed punctuality, and the idea that hard work always pays off. Gerry never turned down a person’s need of help in building something, or loaning them tools.
He married Sammie Partain on December 21, 1962 – her birthday – and in 1964 she gave birth to their first daughter, Susan. Three years later, their beloved daughter Kellie came along, who left to be with her Savior and God in 2011. Gerry was a kind and generous man, with a great sense of humor. No one was safe from him trying to play a trick on them – and he always would, given the opportunity!
Gerry loved hunting, fishing, and could hit a golf ball when younger. His family came first, so his hobbies dwindled over the years to a love of bowling. His responsibilities at home were always top priority, which made him the most extraordinary husband and father.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar R. Cooper and Irene Cooper; daughter, Kellie Cooper; brother, Royce Cooper; nephew, Brad Cooper; and many cherished family he has now reunited with.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Sammie Partain Cooper; daughter, Susan Denise Cooper Guerin; son-in-law, Steve Guerin; brother, Ronnie Cooper (Nancy) and their daughter, Jessica; Royce’s son, Craig Cooper (Tami); a niece, Paula Weaver, who looked to him like a father; in-laws, Susie Taylor, Fancie and Mickey Holdbrooks, and Ryan Holdbrooks; as well as a host of cherished family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway, with a chapel service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery.
