James Gordon House, Jr., 86, passed away on Friday, November 26, 2021, after a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Mobile, Mr. House was born on November 14, 1935 to Mr. and Mrs. James Gordon House, Sr. (Dorothy). He graduated from University Military School (UMS- Wright) in 1953, and matriculated to the University of Alabama where he graduated in 1957. He attended both the University of Alabama School of Law and Jones School of Law, graduating in 1960. He practiced law in Mobile for 61 years and was regarded as one of the most experienced, knowledgeable, and well-respected probate attorneys in Mobile. He served as a special probate judge through the Mobile County Probate Court. Throughout his legal career, he worked on multiple committees through the Mobile County Bar Association and the Alabama Bar Association. He dearly loved the practice of law and the countless number of clients he represented in the six decades of his practice. Mr. House was a member of several Mobile mystic societies and actively participated in Mobile’s Mardi Gras for decades. He loved to paint, and his art was exhibited at both the Cathedral Gallery and Amber Ivey Fine Art in Mobile. An avid Alabama football fan, he never missed an opportunity to watch his beloved Crimson Tide. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mrs. Sandra Gray House, and his sister Mrs. Carolyn House Bullock (Curtis). He is survived by his son, James Gordon House, III (Susan) of Jackson, Mississippi, his cherished granddaughter, Hallie Gray House of Jackson, and sister-in-law Donna Gray Fowlkes (Carter) of Atlanta, Georgia. Also, his nieces Ashley Bullock Duffy of Mobile, Cynthia Bullock Beslin (John) of Raine, Louisiana, Virginia Kenyon Elsevier (Chris) of Atlanta, and nephew Michael Geoffrey Kenyon of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Additionally, he is survived by his close and special companion, Barbara Binion Beard, of Atlanta.
Mr. House and his family would like to express their gratitude to the wonderful doctors and nurses of Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia for the care and compassion shown to Mr. House during his recent illness.
Visitation will be held 12:00 P.M. Friday, December 3, 2021 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, followed by a service in the chapel at 1:00 P.M. Burial will follow at Magnolia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mobile Bar Association or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
