James Malcolm McCall born January 12, 1946 in Abingdon, VA (Washington County) passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Mobile, AL on Sunday, January 9, 2022, just three days shy of his 76th birthday.
He graduated from Abingdon High School in 1964. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Kaskaskia from 1965-1969. He worked many years as a Sheet Metal Mechanic at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS.
From an early age he loved to sing and play his guitar. He had a smooth baritone voice and could play most any song by ear. Born and raised on a dairy farm, he had a natural love for all animals. Over the years, many strays found their way, not only into his heart, but also into his home. He was naturally talented in woodworking and mechanically inclined. A cradle Presbyterian, he followed the Baptist faith in later years and has been a member of Crawford Baptist Church since 2014. He loved and trusted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. In his retirement years, he loved riding his John Deere tractor, enjoyed raising his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and felt most comfortable in his suspenders and cowboy hat.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Matthew McCall and Irene Trigg Watson McCall; brother, Earl Ray McCall; and sisters, Virginia “Ginny” Kathryn McCall Gray, Ruth “Boots” McCall Tillison, and Laura Anne McCall Snapp.
He was committed to his family including his beloved wife of 54 years, Jerry Dianne Owen McCall; two daughters, Polly Ann McCall Garner and Elizabeth Dianne McCall; six grandchildren, Donald Franklin “Frankie” Garner III, Savannah Dianne McCall, Alanna Sade McCall, Shane Joaquin DeAngelo Jones, Christian Valentino James Jones, and Malcolm Owen Jones; two great-grandchildren, Mason Kyree McCall and Penelope Namiko Dianne McCall; brother, William “Bill” Matthew McCall Jr. (Irene) of Abingdon, VA; sisters, Mary Mitchell of Abingdon, VA, Edith Brown of Sun Lakes AZ, Esther Rhodes (Eddie) of Brooksville FL; beloved nephew, Matthew Bradley Rexrode of Atlanta, GA; numerous other relatives and friends.
