
James Daniel Morrow, Jr. - Age 83, born April 9, 1928, in Cordova, Alabama, departed this life on Friday, November 11, 2011, in a local hospital. Mr. Morrow was preceded in death by his parents, James Daniel Morrow, Sr. and Katie Willingham Morrow. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bobbie Baxter Morrow; a son, Jefferson Daniel Morrow; granddaughter, Tally Malone Morrow; and a brother, William Edward (B.J.) Morrow. Mr. Morrow will be missed by his many nieces, nephews and close friends, including Arnell Dubose, whom he considered as not only a best friend, but as a family member. James, affectionately known as "Sport" Morrow by his many friends, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, the Korean war and the 375th Transportation Unit of the Army Reserves. Mr. Morrow was a graduate of Cordova High School, Cordova, Alabama, Livingston State Teacher's College, Livingston, Alabama, now the University of West Alabama and received his graduate degrees from the University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama. His early years of employment were with Sears, Roebuck and Company, Glidden Paint Company and American Bitumuls and Asphalt Company. Mr. Morrow spent 28 years in the Mobile County Public School System as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal. He was a positive influence on his students and was always greeted with a chorus of "Hey Coach Morrow" wherever he went. He retired in 1990, as assistant principal of Baker High School, Mobile, Alabama. Mr. Morrow's tenure in the Mobile County Public School System included positions at Prichard Middle School, Satsuma High School, Alba High School, Mobile County High School in Grand Bay, Theodore High School, Blount High School, and Baker High School. The highlight of his coaching career was working along side his former high school coach and good friend, Coach C.A. Douglas, while serving on the coaching staff at Theodore High School. Mr. Morrow was a Master Mason and charter member of Spanish Fort Lodge #916, F & AM. He was an active member of Cottage Hill Baptist Church, Mobile, Alabama, where, for many years, he served as an usher, participated in the church's meal delivery program and sang with the Joy Singers Choir. Mr. Morrow was a member of the University of West Alabama Alumni Association and Retired Teachers Association of Alabama. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home on Monday, November 14, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Ronnie McCarson officiating.
Visitation will be Sunday, November 13, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Fairhope Cemetery in Chatom at 1:00 p.m.
Honorary pallbearers are Arnell DuBose, Donald C. McWilliams, Nick C. Nichols, James Karagan, and James Edwards. Active pallbearers are Henry Ross, Gary Dearmon, Kennith Godwin, Victor DuBose, Franklin Baxter, and Bob Gallant.
