
Mr. Barter was a graduate of McGill Institute, a founding member of St. Pius X Catholic Church, and a member of a Mobile mystic society. He was a decorated veteran of World War II having flown 69 missions with the 17th Bomb Group of the 12th Air Force. For his service he was awarded the Air Medal with 13 Oak clusters. Upon leaving the military, Mr. Barter returned to Mobile and worked with the US Army Corps of Engineers prior to being reactivated for military service during the Korean War. Mr. Barter once again returned to work at the Corps of Engineers and later retired with over 55 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. P.G. Barter; sisters, Mary Louise Collier and Theresa Bullock; brother, Percy George Barter; daughter, Julie Holmes and wives, Helen Dumas Barter and Margaret Katherine Barter.
He is survived by his children, Marc S. (Jeanne) Barter, Michael G. (Susan) Barter, Joseph Philip (Amy) Barter Jr., Caryn Barter (Jim) Sweat, Martin G. (Brenda) Barter and Sue Barter (John) Carrington. In addition, he leaves behind his brother, Frank W. Barter, 15 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, 22 nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Patrick Nolan for his excellent care. The family is exceptionally grateful for the friendship and loving care provided by his sister-in-law Bunny Matthews. The family would like to thank Lisa Mosley, Joyce Ball, Augustine Slack, Shirley Mae West, Rhonda Richardson and Covenant Hospice of Mobile for helping Mr. Barter remain in his home until the end.
Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home at 3155 Dauphin Street, Mobile, Alabama from 5:00-8:00 pm on January 11, 2012. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am at St. Pius X Church on January 12, 2012.
