
Dr. Judson R. Martin, Jr. age 87, passed away at a local hospital on Friday, December 7, 2012. A native of Tuscaloosa, AL he was a resident of Theodore, AL for 58 years. Dr. Martin proudly served his country as a Merchant Marine during WW II, and was a MSGT in the USAF during the Korean Conflict. He moved to Theodore in 1954 where he began his career in education as a bus driving, teaching assistant principal at Theodore High School. In 1960 he became principal of Hollinger’s Island Elementary School and then was named Assistant Superintendent of Personnel for the Mobile County Public Schools. He also served as Assistant Superintendent of College Relations and worked as an Executive Assistant in the Curriculum Instruction Division before retiring in 1993 with 39 years of service. He was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church of Theodore where he was a deacon and taught Sunday school until his health began to fail. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Judson R. Martin, Sr. and Frances Rutland Martin, 2 sisters, Frances Martin of Marion, AL and Mary M. Baker of Eufaula, AL and his beloved daughter Patricia Martin Weldy of Houston, TX. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mavis L. Martin of Theodore, AL, 1 son, Judson R. Martin, III of Mobile, AL, 1 sister, Arragene Martin of Mobile, AL, 1 brother, John S. Martin (Linda) of Mobile, AL, 1 brother-in-law, Robert Baker of Dothan, AL, son-in-law, Philip Weldy of Houston, TX, many nieces, nephews, and a host of dear friends. The family will receive friends on Monday, December 10, 2012 from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 11 A.M. from the First Baptist Church of Theodore, 7125 Bellingrath Road, Rev. David Gill, pastor and officiating minister. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Baraca Sunday School Class and the Deacons of FBC Theodore. Active pallbearers will be Ellis Anderson Eddie Bolton, Otis Brunson, Joe Debrow, Drew Hansen, Morris Moore, William “Buddy” Pope and Randy Torbert. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Springhill Home Hospice. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens.
