Julie Segler Catlin 69, Mobile, Alabama The family of Julie Segler Catlin invite friends and family to gather with them to celebrate the life of their wonderful wife, mother, aunt, friend, and colleague in the chapel of Pinecrest Funeral Home and Cemetery, Monday, August 8th , 2016 at 3 o’clock in Mobile, Alabama. Julie completed her battle with cancer and went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Friday, August 5th, 2016. Many people in Mobile have been impacted by this wonderful lady through her lifelong devotion to education in Mobile’s public school gifted programs. Julie was born April 16, 1947 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her father, Norris Frederick Segler Sr., was a pioneer space scientist/engineer in America’s Apollo moon landings. She was extremely proud of his accomplishments, especially that he was presented the Apollo Achievement Award and a commemorative coin that flew to the Moon aboard Apollo 8, man’s first flight to the Moon. Julie’s mother, Lois Reese Segler, studied anthropology at the University of Utah. She instilled in Julie the joys of reading and lifelong learning. Julie was a 1965 graduate of Skyline High School in Salt Lake City. After high school Julie enrolled as an accounting major at The University of Alabama in the fall of that year. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Accounting in May 1969. Julie worked as a public accountant in Tuscaloosa and Mobile, Alabama after graduation. Julie met her husband Mentor Catlin in September of 1968 while they were both taking an elective course in pre-school child development. She loved to tell people that Mentor asked her to go out on their first date while they were helping some three and four year olds play “Candy Land.” One of Julie’s proudest accomplishments was giving birth to her wonderful daughter Kathryn Lois Rutland nee Catlin on November 23, 1977. She was very proud of Katie and very pleased that she followed in her footsteps to become a wonderful person and a fellow teacher, as well as presenting her with the opportunity to be a grandmother to a wonderful little boy, Kaleb Rutland, in 2007. After returning to the University of Alabama, receiving a teaching certificate in the field of business education, and three years of courting, Julie and Mentor were married on May 28, 1972. They lived for the next two years in Tuscaloosa and taught at Druid High School while continuing to take courses at the University. Julie and Mentor later returned to Mobile to live and teach. Julie specialized in accounting, book keeping, and business ethics at Williamson High School. Julie earned a Master’s degree from The University of South Alabama specializing in teaching gifted students while still teaching full time at Williamson. Although Julie was a master teacher at Williamson and beloved by her students, she found her true calling in life when she started teaching elementary gifted students. Julie’s many intellectual talents and abilities were used to inspire her students to enjoy learning and develop thinking skills that would serve them for their entire lives. Julie began teaching in the PACE program for gifted and creative students at Dixon Elementary in 1983 and later was based at Griggs Elementary School. She also provided services for other schools including Meadowlake and Burroughs. Over the years many of her students and their parents contacted Julie to thank her for the love she had for her students and the important role she had played in their successes in life. Julie cherished hearing from her former students and believed this was the greatest reward any teacher could have bestowed upon them. Upon her retirement from teaching in 2000, Julie was honored by her fellow PACE teachers with a star named after her - Sagitta RA 2h 6m 44s D 20’ 23’ as Julien S. Catlin. She took great pride in being honored by her fellow teachers. After her retirement, Julie had time to pursue her many and varied interests. Reading was a lifelong interest and brought her many wonderful hours of pleasure. She leaves behind a wonderfully eclectic library that reveals her wide range of interests. She loved history and was especially interested in the study of ancient Egypt. Julie taught herself many of the skills she needed to undertake her diverse projects. All of her projects displayed her many creative skills and abilities. She was especially fond of wood working and used wood to create art, toys, and learning games. Over the years she put together a workshop that required her to master many tools, but her favorite tool was her scroll saw which provided her with many hours of pleasure. Julie also loved cooking…..especially goodies, solving all kinds of puzzles, researching family history, sewing clothes for the dolls and stuffed animals she made, playing games on her computer, and working with ”mother-earth” by getting her hands in the dirt in her gardens. Among those Julie left behind are her loving husband of 44 years, Dr. Mentor Catlin, a fellow educator; her devoted daughter, Kathryn Lois Rutland, a Certified Academic Language Therapist with focus in Dyslexia; Katie’s husband and her son-in-law, Rev. Micah C. Rutland whom she loved and respected; her wonderful grandson, Kaleb Conly Rutland whom she loved with all her heart; her sister, Marina Segler Anderson, and her children Brian Matthew Anderson and Kelly Meredith Anderson; her sister-in-law and closest, dearest friend Gail Harwood Salva, her husband Carlos and their children Norris Frederick Segler III, Nicholas William Segler, Joshua Adam Segler, Daniel Cody Segler, Nicholas Allan Salva, and Kevan Dwayne Salva – all of whom she held very dear to her heart. Julie was preceded in death by her brother Norris Fredrick Segler Jr.; her beloved cousin, Leigh Garey; and her parents.
