Marjorie “Jean” Imogene Steelman, 81, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 7, 2021, surrounded by her loving family at her home in Mobile, Alabama. Jean was born to James H. Isbill and Marjorie Jordan Isbill on September 14, 1939 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from William Carey College (University) in 1961. Jean then began her career as a music teacher – first serving in the Mississippi school system before moving to the Mobile school system, totaling a 40-year career before retiring from W.P. Davidson High School after 19 year tenure. In addition to teaching in schools, Jean also taught piano. She was a Godly woman, and a big proponent in ministries. Jean worked alongside her step-father and her mother with the Mobile chapter of the Source of Light Ministries. She was a member of Christ Fellowship Baptist church, where she was an organist and in facilitated with the media ministry. Jean was a tremendous caregiver – she was the first person at the bedside of a sick friend or family member in the hospital, and she felt visiting hours did not apply to her, but not one time was she ever asked to leave! She enjoyed reading, crafting, playing games, and camping. Jean was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and teacher. She is greatly loved and will be missed.
Jean was preceded in death by her father, James H. Isbill; mother, Marjorie Isbill Hall; and step-father, Joe Hall.
She is survived by her adoring husband of 63 years, David Steelman, Sr.; her three sons, David Steelman, Jr. (Marilyn), James Steelman (Jacqueline), and Michael Steelman; three grandchildren, Jordan Steelman (Emma), William Steelman, and Kelli Steelman; as well as a host of other cherished family and friends.
Visitation for Jean will be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, Alabama, with a short devotional service immediately following. Interment will be in Pine Crest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to Christ Fellowship Baptist Church at www.cfmobile.org or call the church office for other ways to donate.
