

Nupur was born to Jogesh Banik and Kusum Banik on January 31, 1958, in Udaipur, Tripura, India. She received her Bachelor of Science with honors in Physiology, Zoology, and Chemistry from Maharaja Bir Bikram College of University of Calcutta; a Master of Science degree in Physiology and Biochemistry, First Class, at University of Calcutta, India; and a Ph.D. in Physiology at University of Calcutta, India. Dr. Dey was a biomedical scientist whose research advanced understanding of nitric oxide-cGMP signaling in vascular smooth muscle, which helped to clarify the mechanisms underlying vascular tone, remodeling, and cardiovascular disease. She also contributed to studies in cancer biology, particularly the role of ubiquitin-mediated regulation in DNA repair and genome stability.
In her spare time, Nupur enjoyed painting, cooking, gardening, drawing, birdwatching, visiting and travelling with her daughters, reading Joyce Meyers, staying current with scientific literature, and taking walks. Her greatest joy in life, however, was caring for her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jogesh Chandra Banik and Kusum Banik; elder brothers, Siba Krishna Banik and Nani Gopal Banik; and elder sister, Suruchi Banik.
Nupur is survived by her husband, Susanta Kumar Dey; beloved daughters, Suranjana and Nandita Dey; son-in-law, Miles Smith; elder sister, Ava Banik; two elder brothers, Sankar and Sanjit Banik; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and cherished colleagues.
A funeral ceremony for Nupur will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, beginning at 11 a.m. at Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway in Mobile, Alabama.
