Phyllis McLaughlin Blount Thomas passed this life into God's embrace on August, 24, 2024. She was born in Tuscaloosa in 1949, the daughter of Phillip Garvice Blount and Betty Jo McLaughlin and moved to Mobile when she was four.
Phyllis was a graduate of Davidson High School where she served as President of her Phi Gamma Sorority and went on to graduate at the University of Alabama where she was the President of her Delta Zeta Sorority and earned a degree in Finance. During summer breaks at college, she worked at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville where she met her husband, Robert (Bob) Thomas.
When Phyllis returned to Mobile after college, she and Bob had two daughters, Christina Thomas of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Maggie Sawicki (Joe) of Austin, Texas. Her love of children and their potential led her to teach Pre-K 3 at Ashland Place United Methodist Church and later at St. Luke's Episcopal School. She is fondly remembered by many of her students and their parents.
She is survived by her husband and daughters, sisters Mary Jo Cates (Reid) of Mobile and Susan Aden (Mark) of Birmingham. Her grandchildren are Tom and Charlotte Sawicki and Katie Thomas-Chappell. She is also loved and survived by many nephews, nieces, cousins, and several close friends.
