

Dr. Thomas Chesterfield Lane died on December 16th, 2013. He was born on August 14th, 1934 in Humboldt, Tennessee. He graduated from Humboldt High School, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis. He interned at Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee and following a year of General Surgery was in private practice in Fulton, Kentucky. He served as a Captain in the United States Army following which he completed his General Surgery residency at Mobile General Hospital as well as a Fellowship in Colon and Rectal surgery at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. He served as president of the medical staff at the Mobile Infirmary and Chief of Staff at HCA Doctor’s Hospital. Dr. Lane was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Piedmont Society, Medical Society of Mobile County, and was elected to the Mobile County Board of Health. He was a long time member of Dauphin Way United Methodist Church. Dr. Lane was preceded in death by his parents Lyle L. Lane and Nell Jane Warmath Lane, his brothers Perry V. Lane and Dr. Martin L. Lane, and his grandson James Rickman Lane. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Shirley, his children Mary Elizabeth Shelton (Bill) of Cataula, Georgia, Dr. John Martin Lane (Joan) of Florence, Alabama, and Dr. Daniel Richard Lane, Sr. (Tracey) of Mobile, his grandchildren Andrew Thomas Young, Katherine Lane Young, Thomas Jackson Lane, Jeffery Daniel Lane, Anne Holland Lane, Mary Elizabeth Lane, Daniel Richard Lane, Jr., Mary Elise Lane, Anna Ruth Lane, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Tom was a generous, kind, and gentle man, who loved his family and his country. He was an avid reader, historian, and proud patriot. He was passionate about gardening and the Tennessee Volunteers. Donations can be made to Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice. A memorial service will be held at Dauphin Way UMC at 11:00am, on Thursday December 19, 2013 immediately followed by a visitation and reception at the church.
