

Thomas Joseph LeGros went home to be with the Lord on November 3, 2016. He was born on June 27, 1931 in Mobile, AL He was preceded in death by his parents John Terrell LeGros, Sr. and Annie Friedhoff LeGros and his brother John Terrell LeGros, Jr. He is survived by his wife Martha Bradley LeGros, sister Dolores LeGros Vorreiter, children David LeGros (Christy) and Ann LeGros Rambeau (Rick) of Mobile; Ronald LeGros (Janice) of Lacey, Washington; Clint LeGros of Gotha, Florida; Kelley Rideout (Greg) of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandchildren Jennifer (Aaron) Lovvorn-Harris, Jason Compton, Thomas LeGros, Vanessa Knight (Blake Nelson), Brittany Knight, Kate Rideout, Carter Rideout, Daltrey LeGros, Dylan LeGros, Megan LeGros, and Parker LeGros; great grandchildren Graham Lovvorn-Harris, Nora Lovvorn-Harris, Harrison Patrick Compton, and Blake Nelson; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Tom graduated from McGill High School where he was the school quarterback and pitcher. He earned a BS degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and was their quarterback and pitcher also.
He received a Masters Degree from the University of Alabama and a AA degree from the University of South Alabama. During the summers when Tom was in college, he pitched for the Thomasville, AL Ramblers. He was known as “Thomasville’s Tommy” and is somewhat of a local legend. He was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and played on their farm teams in Los Angeles and Des Moines until an automobile accident ended his pitching career. Tom was inducted into the Hall of Fame at both McGill and Southern Miss for his athletic achievements at both institutions.
Tom loved young people and loved to teach. He taught math at UMS, McGill, and Murphy. He was also head football coach at McGill. He went on to serve as an assistant principal at Williamson High School and Murphy High School and retired as principal of Theodore Middle School.
Tom served his country in the Alabama Army National Guard for 33 years. He retired with the rank of colonel. His last command was the 226th field depot at Fort Whiting Armory.
He was a member of the Korean War Veterans, Military Officer’s Association, Retired Educator’s Association, and M Club at University of Southern Mississippi. He was an active member of Dayspring Baptist Church. He was known for his dry wit, his generous heart, and his loving spirit. He liked to fish, watch Alabama football, play pinochle, and hug. He loved his family, his church, and his dog Sam.
Tom had many loving and devoted friends who stayed in touch through the years and he will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home, Monday, November 7, 2016 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Pine Crest Cemetery with military honors.
