Voncile Sadka lived life on her own terms. She was not one to follow convention unless it suited her nature. She believed in honest communication, even when it was not convenient or polite. She loved a good story, and her face was etched in later years with laugh lines. She believed in hard work and with her own hands created an oasis on Dog River, where she lived for nearly 50 years: her unassuming home had a swimming pool, screened-in outdoor kitchen, rooftop deck, covered patio, cement boat ramp, covered boat dock, fishing pier, irrigated fishpond, and gazebo. She could frequently be seen in her home-built party barge fishing with friends and neighbors, crabbing, or enjoying a beverage on the bayou. She was generous to her friends and harsh with those who crossed her sense of right and wrong. She loved small children. She was the lone girl in a family of nine brothers, and she learned early how to work for what she wanted. One of her earliest jobs was as a welder in the Mississippi shipyards. She was the first licensed female barber in Alabama, and for years ran her own barber shop, which accounted for her easy and confident way with all people, whether they were friends or complete strangers. She barbered at the Coast Guard Station for several decades and worked into her late 80’s at Cheryl’s Barber Shop on Dauphin Island Parkway. She is survived by her daughter, Johnnie Dean Sadka, of Mobile. Her lively spirit and strong character will be missed – and long remembered – by all those she influenced and loved. A graveside service for Voncile will be held on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in Pine Crest Cemetery.
