
He was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, to Ruth J. and Lide C. Culp. He graduated from El Dorado High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Louisiana Tech and a master's degree from the University of South Alabama. During the Korean War he served in the U. S. Army. He taught at St. Paul's Episcopal School, where he founded the athletic program and coached football, basketball, golf, and swimming. He was a teacher, coach, and administrator in Mobile County public schools, including Davidson High School and Shaw High School. At the University of South Alabama he directed the Talent Search program. He was a member of the chancel choir at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church.
His son, William C. Culp, Jr., his parents, and three sisters predeceased him.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Beth, daughter Cathy Case and her husband Collier, and two grandchildren, Jonathan and Caroline King.
A memorial service will be held at Spring Hill Presbyterian Church at 1:00 Tuesday, September 6, 2011, with visitation following in the Fellowship Hall. Memorials may be made to Spring Hill Presbyterian Church.
