William R (Bill) Hanlein died just 71 days before his 100th birthday. He was born in Mobile in 1924 and attended schools there, graduating from Murphy High School in 1941. From there he went to Auburn University in Jan., 1942, on the co-op plan and stayed on the plan until early 1943. At that time he and several Auburn friends volunteered for active duty in WW II. He served in the European Theater with the l03rd Infantry Division until VE Day, 1945. He returned to Auburn in Jan., 1946, and graduated Dec., 1947, with a degree in Industrial Engineering.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Sue Houston Hanlein, and they have two Auburn graduate daughters, Constance H Blevins (Tony) and Patricia Hanlein. Most of his professional life was in the brokerage business with E. F. Hutton until retirement in 1990. Since then he worked as a volunteer at Providence Hospital and as an arbitrator for the NYSE and NASD. When not volunteering he was found on the golf course.
