Wilson Maxwell Hawkins, Jr. passed away peacefully in his home on May 12, 2024. He was born in 1946 in Moss Point, Mississippi to Major General Wilson Maxwell Hawkins and Jaqueline Stewart Hawkins. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sarah Louise Hawkins Burke and his beloved granddaughter Lillian Adele Crowe. He is survived by his wife of 30 years Caroline Porch Hawkins, his brother Paul Stewart Hawkins, his children Wilson James Hawkins, Priscilla Anne Hawkins Crowe, Thomas Edward McMillan III (Susanne), Lucile McMillan Ladd (Patrick), his grandchildren Charles Maxwell Polasky, Benton Matthew Polasky, Mary Coley McMillan, Caroline Lucile McMillan, Thomas Edward McMillan IV, Caroline DuPre Ladd, Patrick Benton Ladd Jr, Louise McMillan Ladd, great granddaughter Annie Kate Polasky and many nieces and a nephew.
After following his military father around abroad and stateside for a stretch, the family settled down for a brief stint in Leavenworth, Kansas where Wilson graduated from Leavenworth High School. He went on to attend Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, completed his undergraduate degree in Economics at Midwestern University in Wichita Falls, Texas, and finished his education at The University of Tennessee College of Law in Knoxville, Tennessee where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1970. Soon after, he moved to Mobile, Alabama to begin his law career at Collins, Galloway and Murphy. Wilson later moved on to private practice until his retirement. He helped many people throughout his legal career and kept his Alabama Bar membership current until his death.
Everyone who knew Wilson will remember his fun-loving attitude and his positive outlook on life, will miss his culinary skills, and will be inspired by his faith in the Lord. If you ever went on a hunting trip with Wilson, you were aware that he was happier planning and preparing the feast after the hunt than he was in the woods hoping to shoot the main course. Also, special thanks is given to Laticia Wilkins and Sharon Markow for their devotion and dedicated care given to Wilson during his time of need, and to Wilson’s previous wife Priscilla Chilcoat Alexander, the mother of Wilson James Hawkins and Priscilla Anne Hawkins Crowe.
A service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, May 16 at 10:30 am with visitation to immediately follow in the parish hall.
The family asks in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 4501 Old Shell Road, Mobile, Alabama 36608.
